Posted By KEVIN O'KANE Hi, I have had a request from one of our staff who is asthmatic, who want this put on her personnel record. She also thinks it would be a good idea if the first aiders were informed of her condition in her building.I was wondering if anyone else has been asked this and what did you decide to do. Many Thanks

Posted By Sean Fraser Totally agree with your employee - should an athmatic attack take place, your first aiders will be better placed to deal with it. The onus is now on them to bone up on asthma, signs and symptoms and how to deal with it. Of course, you can only do this now that you have been asked to provide that information by the sufferer themselves. You cannot pass this information on unless you have been given permission to do so, even if it could, in theory, save their lives by faciliating a quicker response in an emergency. The privacy of the person must be honoured. Remember too that the information is for the First Aiders only - it cannot be passed on to others unless the sufferer agrees. One thing to point out - the First Aiders now know to look for the inhaler, but they should only pass it to the sufferer and support them while they take it. They cannot administer the drug itself, UNLESS they have been specifically trained to do so. The standard First Aid at Work course will NOT have covered this aspect (administering medication).

Posted By Rachael Palmer Kevin, you could suggest that she gets a SOS Talisman and wears it at all times. It looks like a piece of jewellery, which securely contains a long piece of specially treated paper on which is written ALL your vital medical details - on both sides!!? 12 inches long, waterproof, instantly available, full of your medical conditions, allergies, doctor's details, blood group, medications etc etc etc - and doctors and paramedics are trained to look for it when they they are presented with an unconscious patient. Details written on both sides in permanent/ waterproof ink.bracelet. Would be far better than relying on first aiders checking personal records. I believe thay can be purchased at most major chemists, jewellers etc. Google SOS Talisman and you'll find a host of sites selling them. For more info follow this link http://www.sostalisman.org/
