Posted By Alan G Hi everyone, I have been in discussion with managers with regards to employees wearing shorts and trainers in a motorcycle repair workshop. We have compromised by saying the engineers can wear a T-Shirt but they have to wear trousers and steel toe cap boots at all times while they are working. I was wondering if anyone has some key examples of injures or similar cases where by failing to where trousers in this type of environment have caused a serious injury. The only excuse from our engineers why they refuse to wear the trousers is it is to hot. Any reply will be appreciated Thanks in advance to you all Alan

Posted By Les Welling I have none I'm afraid. BUT as you are aware, you will need to carry out a risk assessment on the process. Although strickly speaking normal trousers are probably not PPE under the Regs.

Posted By Bunny Oil can cause dermititis (ooh the spelling of that doesn't look right...never mind). Motorbikes can cause leg burns because of the location of engine and exhaust pipes in relation the legs. Safety shoes stop crushed toes from heavy parts. To be honest, I want to wear shorts and t-shirts to work when it's too hot, but I can't! In a word 'tough'.

Posted By Jason911 whats dermititis? sounds a bit rude to me. If the workshop is anything like ours there are many different chemical used that are an irritant to skin. Gloves are warn to protect hands and overall to prevent spillages on bare legs ect...
