Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best form of smoke detectors to deploy in a small warehouse area? We currently have a number of manually operated horns for fire alarms - consequently we are looking for independent smoke detectors.

Predominately light bulbs and fittings in cardboard boxes and ladders.

The type of detectors depends on the height of the premises and also what is being stored. For the type of storage you have suggested you could use optical smoke detectors, Beams or if you have the money available, high sensitivity smoke detection (HSSD). It sounds to me that you may be looking for a cost effective way of doing the job as you refer to the need for independent detectors. In this case you could use domestic type detectors, hard wired to the mains supply with an internal battery. Use the same spacing as recommended in BS5839 i.e 100 square meters. Consider in your choice that the higher you install what is called a 'point detector' the slower the speed of response and the larger the quantity of smoke required to activate it.
If you want to do the job properly, use proper 24vdc smoke detectors designed for commercial and industrial use, connected to a control panel and sounders. If you do this then you may as well add a couple of manual alarm points for what little extra these cost.
e-mail me if you want further advise.
Regards
Ashley
