Hi all,
I am sure I have recently seen a questionnaire/survey tool for gauging the safety culture/attitudes in a company but I must have filed it, probably on my desk. Anyone know where one may be available?

Thanks

Colin

Hi Colin

There are various ways to measure 'safety culture', but none have been proven as rigidly accurate. You can measure climate at one given time. I know the HSE safety climate tool has been mentioned on this forum: I am not sure whether this is still available.

The most effective assessment of safety culture, in my opinion, is via a structured facilitated one-on-one interview process, supported by evaluation of standards and observations of behaviours on site.

The trick I often experience isn't always knowing where people are, but knowing how to improve.

If you need further information please drop me an email direct.
Kind regards

Ian

search hse and google etc. for health and safety climate (as opposed to culture) tools and you may have more success.

Start at the bottom with "shop floor staff" - talking, observing, listening etc and then compare with Management. Finally, look at details of accidents / near misses as this can provide prima facie evidence of unsafe behaviour.

I have just rung HSE books and the HSe climate survery tool is still for sale and hs been upgraded to be compatible with Win 2000 and XP.

We had used in the past but our old version for win95 was no longer compatible so we are getting the new one so we can compare result from the past 5 years and see how we have progressed.

You may also find this link helpful:

http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...iew&forum=1&thread=18658

and also there is a site called www.zoomerang.com which lets you build your own climate surveys online for free and gives you a comprehensive breakdown of results. You can pay for the full services with unlimited questions and employees for about £300 quid, the best quote I have ad in the UK for this has been from a company called employeeinsights which was around £1500 for an online survey with anaylsis and data representation, or from just £100 giving raw data back for your own interpretation.

Hope this has been of help

Does referring to talking to shop floor staff as "starting at the bottom" say anything about the culture of an organisation?

I’ve viewed a number of these and partaken in a few with different employers.
My view is that they are rarely a robust tool.

Anyway…….. to save you the money, time & effort of doing one, here is the conclusion you will get:

Shop floor will say Management does not take H&S seriously.
Management will say H&S is our number one priority.

Shop floor will say more needs to be done.
Management will say H&S is well controlled in this company.

Management will say the cause of accidents in our company is due to shopfloor not doing as they are told.
Shop floor will say Management does not communicate.
