I know that summer and the hot sunny weather seems to be distant memory now, but like the thunder, the issue of wearing shorts for work rumbles on! If anyone out there has any experience at dealing with the argument of 'comfort v safety', I would be grateful if you could share your experience with me. We operate a range of services, mainly for local authorities.
Many thanks

The wearing of shorts is an old can of chestnuts. Basically you simply need to look at the risks i.e. if employees are likely to cut or damage their legs by wearing shorts when working they should not be allowed to wear shorts. However, if they are working in an environment where this is not likely, shorts can be worn.

I agree with the previous posting, but would also add that a risk assessment (yes, it always come back to RAs) should be completed and any controls needed, such as banning shorts, should then follow. You will note, that a blanket ban has no merit at all, if the risks are so mundane then what is the problem with shorts?
Incidentally, I was playing golf a few weeks ago with a Director of a SME in building work. He had baned shorts in his company. When I enquired for what activities he said 'fitting out kitchens' etc. I responded 'tell me the hazards associated with partially bare legs whilst fitting out kitchens'. Needless to say he could not.
Regards
Ray

Thanks for your responses. I had formed the same views on the matter, and you have now confirmed them.
