Looking at a formal quality accreditation system for a medium sized business that carries out building and civil engineering, but not design. What standard should I be looking at with regards ISO.

At the risk of demonstrating my ignorance, I think the answer is ISO 9001:2000.
If I recollect, previously it was ISO 9002:1994, but the two 1994 standards were merged with the introduction of ISO 9001:2000.
The whole design thing is now dealt with under the clauses of the standard.
Apologies in advance for any duff info here... Your best source for confirmation would br the British Standards Institution.

At the risk of seeming a pedant, the word accreditation has a special meaning. Your organisation will seek certification to ISO 9001 from a registrar who is accredited by UKAS to issue certificates.
You can see the registrars accredited by UKAS at this link http://www.ukas.com/abou...ation_body_schedules.asp
I don't know how often this happens in the UK but I believe there is nothing to stop a non-accredited organisation from issuing a plausible looking certificate. This is why when you are looking at for example a supplier's certificate you should always check that their registrar is on the UKAS list.
