Well this has to be my weirdest one ever. I've just been asked for advice on a charity event we're involved in - a ghost hunt & seance.

Control measures: advise to duck if tables / glasses start flying &
don't break the circle?!

I'll probably just be very cynical and treat it as a bunch of people wandering around with torches, with a bit of sitting at a table though.

Any views?

This HAS to be the best yet!

I think you're right - analyse the individual activities such as wandering around in the dark with torches etc. If the wandering-around bit is to include spooky effects, consider the potential effect on people prone to heart conditions etc.

Beyond that, if anything supernatural DOES happen and cause injury, I reckon volentis would apply as a defence?

Just imagine if you had to report something to RIDDOR.

"Who caused the incident?"

I dont think "The supernatural spirit" would go down too well.

Don't underestimate the effect these things can have on the mind... some pretty serious types have been disturbed by fooling around with this topic.

It's not just the physical hazards.

Oh and I don't think volenti would protect you from negligence on trip hazards.

Spirits covered by DSEAR...giggle!

But no - my comment about volenti related to injury caused by supernatural happenings: Injured person could hardly go to a seance and claim they didn't deliberately put themselves in the way of ghostly goings-on.

Don't forget the manual handling aspect of the rattling chains. (Are spiritual chains heavy?)

I guess you'll need a psychic-social risk assessment.

You may well laugh; but does a place of worship have legal duties to its staff and users!

Cheers folks! gave me a good laugh & also reassured that noone came up with anything glaring obvious that I'd overlooked. For those that mentioned heart conditions & psych impact - how could I control for these? A line in the invitations similar to warnings on rollercoasters, eg not for those of a nervous disposition , existing heart conditions etc?
