Any help gratefully received...

Just been notified of an accident (crushed finger) occurring to a member of the public at a local sports club of which I am a member. This is not a commercial establishment, but a 'members only' sailing club.

Am I required to report this to the regulatory authority? As I read it, I am, since although not being a 'major injury' it happened to a member of the public and resulted in them going to hospital.

Please can anyone confirm whether reporting it is the correct procedure?

Thanks
Andy

No work activity, I'd say not.

If any member of the public is taken to hospital, it is RIDDOR reportable.

So yes!

arising out of or in connection with a WORK ACTIVITY...no work involved here.

Mmmm, well spotted re the work activity.

I guess it wasn't anything to do with work, but we have this thin veil regarding what is classed as work and what isn't (to do with employing a caterer and having volunteer instructors who are 'working' for the benefit of the club).
The member of the public squashed her finger in a gate barrier, so it could be argued that it's nothing to do with 'work', however it is a 'workplace'.

I'm minded to call the regulatory authority and discuss it.. would this be sensible or foolish?

Give the HSE RIDDOR line a call on 0845 300 9923 you can be totally anonymous, no problem there, just put the scenario to them and they will advise one way or the other. I'd edge a bet that this is not reportable, they may tell you that although not reportable you can still report it for piece of mind. It really then depends on whether you think there may be some come back at a later date. I wouldnt worry too much, it's not life threatening is it.....

Regards, Steve

Thanks for your advice, guys. I spoke with the riddor people and they said that it had nothing to do with work - the member of the public was just walking through the grounds. Therefore not reportable.
