Posted By Tabs You may find a residual snobbery and suspicion of hotmail and yahoo addresses. Even BTinternet and AOL ... They all give the impression of "cottage industry" because they are associated with home accounts rather than work accounts. One way around it it to register a domain (google "domain names") for a few quid a year and then set up a mail divert... it is simple. Example: register www.safety_email.co.uk and then set up an email divert on that website to your hotmail account. You can get specific with assigning email addresses such as info@safety_mail.co.uk or leave it open for all options (any word you like)@safety_email.co.uk I think most domain seller sites will tell you how to do this. There may come a time when the snobbery or distrust subsides, but I don't think we are there yet.

Posted By waiks Well I put up with the snobbery because I use a yahoo account. It's convenient for checking whether I'm at work or at home (yes I'm sad enough to check these chat rooms during some weekends). And I'd rather not identify my place of work online but if I contact a poster directly sometimes I do use my work email. I think trust should depend more on the queries rather than the type of email account.

Posted By Tabs I didn't read the enquiry as being specific to this or other forums - for which I agree any address would be absolutely fine - I was thinking more about the statement that it was used as the main account, and therefore for client and vendor communications. Free accounts such as Hotmail do not generate the same responses as main domain names... it is a matter of branding I think.

Posted By Descarte I ttink eveyone should get a hotmail account, how else are you going to find out about the amazing medical advances in the field of herbal viagra or be able to meet bored housewives, get the latest security updates and info requests from banks where you dont even have an account etc..... Or is it just me who recieves about 5-10 of these emails per day! Though I have had my hotmail account for over 6 years and it can probably be found in hundereds of places over the net. Back on track, using a hotmail as a sign of annonymity could be seen as a show of mistrust amongst the site. Though one of the main issues with asking some questions related to individual or companies is that you should not refer to the person or company by name. Bit hard when you leave it at the top of every post you make. In some cases therefore it could be very benificial if not essential not to use your works email for unbiased info.

Posted By CRN Baker I use a hotmail account. I do this as I prefer not to advertise who I work for. This is a personal choice and it means that I'm trying to minimise any risk of identifying my employer and minimise associated spam to my work e-mail (I get enough of that from internal sources!!). OK I'll admit to checking who I'm sending an e-mail to, if they provide a "work" e-mail, then I'm happy respond from mine. If it is a yahoo or hotmail, then I'll use my hotmail account.
