Posted By Tracey C I was informed last week that as a company we can claim back 125% tax releif against remediation of contaminated land and buildings we purchase, does anybody know if this is a recent thing or can we claim for asbestos surveys that were carried out last year? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Posted By Smurfer I don't anything about this, but I would doubt that you could claim for an asbestos survey, or a contaminated land survey since these are intended to identify whether you have an issue or not. But the asbestos removal / land clean-up would probably count. As for claiming for previous years... can't help you, try your company accountant.

Posted By Mark Eden Asbestos surveys, apparently, can be claimed back at the enhanced rate of tax if you are removing the asbestos as well.

Posted By Arran Linton - Smith What you are discussing is normally called Capital Allowances and there is a whole accountancy industry that has grown up around it. On Capital Allowance for asbestos can be seen on the RICS web-site: http://www.rics.org/Mana...removing%20asbestos.html

Posted By Arran Linton - Smith Tracy,
As part of the overall cost of remediation I understand that you can make a claim for the asbestos surveys undertaken, however I do not believe that you can a capital allowances claim alone for the asbestos surveys.
Most capital allowance consultancy normally will not charge you for an initial assessment as they usually take a percentage of the tax relief acquired.

Posted By Les Welling I have heard that remediation for contaminated land can be paid for by the previous owners of the land.

Posted By Tracey C Thank you to everybody who has posted a responce I have found out a lot of information on www.rics.org.uk. Sometimes I wonder if I am an accountant or a health and safety manager. But i suppose us health and safety people have to be multitalented!
