Dear all,
Do you guys think it is good to provide a double lanyard for workers working at height for ensuring continuous fall protection at all time ? What do the workers think of this arrangement and what is the best ways for working at height ?
I would say the best way to consider the most effective fall protection is through an effective risk assessment and starting with a proper working platform.

use the hierarchy in teh Regs. Dont go up there if can avoid, if must go up then risk assess and put controls in place and maintain them, then ensuer no possibility of falling, if cannot ensure that then ensure heights and effects of falls are minimised by collective means and only finally if all else is not reasonably practicable use individual means of fall arrest. However if fall arrest is relied you must put rescue provisions in place.
Double lanyards essential if harnesses used unless the unclipped condition only occurs when in a place of safety. Also falling objects to be guarded against and access to any place of danger to be prevented etc - it is all in the Regs

We use triple Lanyards when walking up the structure, this means that when the guys meet an obstacle they have a spare lanyard to clip over too, this ensures the use of a double lanyard at all times.

Brian - Your triple lanyard seems a bit overboard, if you don't mind me saying, but you know your business better than anyone else. The question raised of double is so that one point of security is maintained at all times, so in my book double will do. It's hard enough to police the use of double, but three wow.

Agree that it seem a bit ott to have three lanyards, not sure of the benefit. Our climbers will utilise a double lanyard method when climbing towers or masts. Fixed fall arrest is used on ladders where installed and double lanyard is only used on the outside or where no fixed is installed. We also reduce the risk by having a ssytem where the first climber will climb using double lanyard and then install a temporary fall arrest system which others can use.

The guys have bought into it, we are talking wet metal surfaces, with anti slip matting in place. At any time there are only two short lanyards in use, the third hanging, the third is attached at crossover points when the lanyards need to be removed one at atime.
If any guy was to fall ill at any time he would remain in position. With the difficulty of rescue being by abseil only; we see the benifits.
We have had joint rescue operations with the emergency services and everything went well, with rescue within ten minutes and no one suspended in a hardness but held in position by the use of two harnesses.
As you say it does work for us.
