What can we do to stop certain individuals from turning this site into a joke, this is an open forum and anyone can join
if we make it a members only site we loose the input of others
Thoughts please
and no this is no wind up

Posted By Descarte Every person who posts on this forum has their IP recorded. This is set in a database again forum members names. This data base can be used to search for member names under the same IP address. This can be used to search for people who are registering names under alter ego's and posting stupid questions. This will lead to that name and all others being banned, their emails being banned and their IP being banned so they can no longer register any other names.

Posted By sagalout JAI, I wish I knew. I see today that you had some stick from some and I was unsure of your banned from site.
I love the banter as much as anyone else. I try hard to share knowledge and experience, I know that posing a question is a good way to spark debate and thus put knowledge into the forum. These days I am better placed to spend time on the forum and yet I often stay away or decide not to get involved. Why? Take the example of risk assessing a pond posted today? Why should it not be genuine but why do I suspect it? My prejudice and perception of course.
I still think there is a place for a "work" forum where, as professionals, we would respect and adopt a higher level of personal discipline either when posting or replying. This forum does not need to be a closed, members only forum, just to have a different purpose. It would support the chat forum and give contributors a clear choice.
There, you have now put me back on my soap box as well today. (smile)

Posted By Descarte In my opinon 6 out of the top 10 threads on this site could be utter rubbish time waisting threads where a question has been asked and then no further response from the original poster leaving more people to trail on trying to help a nonesensical open ended common sense question that anyone could probably find the answer too with either 5 mins on the internet or 30 mins burried in a guidance document

Posted By Merv Newman jai, haven't counted but I think you are a bit harsh with your 6/10 estimate.
And some people, maybe at the start of their careers, or maybe dumped with a problem outside of their experience, may not know which internet site or which guidance document to go to. So they come to us. (must look at the "ponds" thread)
Chill. please.

Posted By Gilles27 I couldn't agree more, even though I am occasionally pleased to put my tongue in cheek, I avoid this when actually giving an opinion or during certain parts of advice I try to help people with. My feeling was to ask for a chat forum and also an 'advice please' forum, but the likes of shytalk would abuse that as well. Perhaps given that the moderators know who we all are, our log ins could be automatically appended with CMIOSH/GradIOSH etc. by them if we are known to IOSH. They know who I am and I have nothing to hide. That way you could get a feel for if it is a time waster or not. Perhaps if ShytalkCFIOSH appeared automatically he/she may not be so inclined to take the P. As for your 'banned from site' bit JAI, I did not suspect it as dodgy at all. Quite believable sadly.
Have a good weekend Gilles27MIOSH (don't charter until this cycle finishes). PS there is a dog walking about on the roof opposite - should I intervene? If its a police dog it may be at work...

Posted By sagalout D, assuming that you meant my suggested work forum?
I was thinking along the lines that such activity would be easier to moderate in a "work" forum. Whether people are being "lazy" or just effectively using time by referring to others who may already know the answer is a choice of perception, who knows which is right since we know nothing of each other in reality.
My point is that if I know that I am "working" I act differently because I check the context and use appropriate behaviour. When I am "chatting", I am doing jsut that. Both are surely valid activity?
For example, I would view any request for help posted on a work forum as genuine. For example, the one I responded today with JAI and the later pond assessment thread. If I subsequently found otherwise, I would report to the moderator and expect action as you describe if the poster did not change or desist.
In a chat forum, podsing a question just to prompt debate is absolutely aceptable. Offering to tell a joke or start a round robin is also acceptable. I just decide whether I have the time to spend and do not worry about whether it is spurious or not. Helps to exercise the brain occassionally. (are there too many consonants in that word or is it my spelling?)
I think this lack of alternative forum means that much is lost to the forum community. But hey ho, time to put the soap box away and enjoy the weekend. I have said all I need to say and do not want to get charged with running a campaign.
Lomg live discussion.

Posted By Richard Altoft use of real names would be a start, would you bother to talk on the phone to someone who insists on using his playground name let alone believe what they say???????? IOSH grades would also be useful if only to allow the genuine advice seeker to evaluate the answers given however it discouraged some to reply that would be a shame as we can all learn and I often find answers useful. Posted By Andy Walker The ponds thread seems quite reasonable to me and as the poster is using his 'proper' address (no lets not do the hotmail discussion again)as many do I can't see the reason to doubt his authenticity.
It's easy enough to sort the wheat from the chaff and as has been said many times before "nobody forces anybody to post on here"
I quite enjoy the light hearted threads and occasional wind up and sometimes they do promote serious debate as they move off at a tangent. If that makes me unprofessional then so be it, but it's my belief that the outside world looking in will only see us as human.

Posted By sagalout Please do not let us believe that someone who does not use their given name and/or leave an open e-mail is not to be trusted or conversely that someone who does is to be trusted. There are many valid reasons why people may choose to withhold personal information on the OPEN forum. A simple example is that we are increasingly advised to use aliases and other means to minimise electronic fraud, playground names or not. Just imagine if you have had a very bad experience of the web, would you still feel confident about "appearing"? The webmaster has access to details as Descartes said earlier in this thread and that should be enough.

Posted By John Murgatroyd PC IP can be changed, ISP IP changes every log-in. Problem solved. Personally, this site would descend into boredom if occupied only by people who agree with each other. You only have to read the input from the "pro's" to realise that in a few days it would descend into the usual "all workers are lazy, fiddling, time wasting, compensation-seeking *****"

Posted By srd Hi all.
Just before I read this thread I posted a reply to the 'moderators' thread in which I suggested we have a 'open' chat free forum in which anyone can seek help and advice, this would be the public face of IOSH and the health and safety profession.
I then suggested we have a 'members only' section in which we could have Friday rants every day of the week, and have 'lively' chats about our opiions of IOSH and the health and safety profession which we knew could not be viewed by non-members.

Posted By John Murgatroyd No problem. An "open" forum in which people can express their views freely, and a "closed shop" where views on restrictive practices, such as concealment of accidents books, refusal to let union safety reps have information, illegally letting unauthorised people have access to personal information and other little favourites can be discussed.
It seems to me, after a few years reading this forum, that the health and safety professionals on here need to seek legal assistance on many occasions. That is, those that are interested in acting within the legal framework that society has constructed (which seems to be fewer and fewer by the day).
Several are becoming in danger of being labelled arrogant in their dislike of employees, and their consideration that they are right all the time.
Personally, as someone with a deep interest in H&S (since many employers have NO interest in it at all), I can state (with over 30 years in the same industry) that if I, and others, left our H&S&W in the hands of the "professionals" we would be in dire straits indeed. Fortunately, through the guise of the HSE, and more usually the insurance company that bears the liability for the company/ies, some REAL improvements have been achieved. I would like to reiterate that these have been achieved IN SPITE of the H&S professionals and not BECAUSE of them, since in many cases they are responsible for the continuance of bad and dangerous practices, in many cases conveniently ignoring "long term" risks because they ARE long term.

Posted By sagalout John, I am deeply disappointed that my profession has so obviously failed you in your work. I agree that the content of this forum is often not of the highest technical standards and is occassionally littered with ill informed opinion about many subjects. But and this is a big BUT. It is after all an open CHAT forum where we know nothing of the person posting, their background, their experience, their motives etc. I have also seen postings where knowing that the answer is just a page away, in the same books and guidance that your allies the HSE and insurers use, but I prefer to point the poster in that direction rather than castigate them for their lack of knowledge. Or those that advocate obviously unlawful or illegal practice may need support. I dare say in my time I have fallen into a similar trap. I know as a safety professional that I have failed more than once in my working life and I know lots of civil engineers, mechanical engineers, accountants, managing directors who also know they have failed.
May I offer you the chance to clarify your point about the removal of threads and the worth of extending to a separate "work" forum.

Posted By JAI Ok
First some good points posted over the weekend, to show you all I’m no wind up, I have opened my e mail, therefore you can see me and e mail me direct, i only blocked my e mail when posting the "banned from site thread" ( because my company name is in it)
i do believe people put wind up threads on here, But how do we know, in the case of the pond thread, it may pay some to check case law as there is some justification for risk assessment and people have drowned in the past,
The thread I posted is a true event the person was actually banned from site, (is this so unbelievable?)
Again there are those out there who have contacted me via e mail and have received information and help from me, So until the Mods can block time wasters, my only answer is if you don't like the thread don't answer it

A good thread to initiate on a particularly thorny subject but one which does need addressing.
GILES27 ~ I like the idea of your potential solution
JAI ~ Your summing up of ‘if you don't like the thread don't answer it’ is sound advice

Posted By Rob T There are some good points accross the board here but my biggest beef is not so much the initiators of threads but some of the responses by people who present themselves as experts when they are totally ignorant of a particular subject. Take for instance the "Turkey" risk assessment thread (last week I think). Three quarters of the respondees offered advice based on absolutely no knowledge and presented it in a way where someone could presume they new what they were talking about. Some of those responses could well get people killed! Why didn't the moderators pull some of those responses particularly the one that said not to do a risk assessment (Anwar). If they are going to remove threads because some poor soul gets upset at being told he's a jerk then why not pull a reply to a thread that is so blatently wrong and could potentially seriously harm someone.

Posted By Jason911 Who reading this can say 100% that their Company or employer is completely boxed off with all H&S Regs?
Not me, if I was I wouldn't need to use this forum would I?
So do you really expect me to use my real name, when EHO's up and down the land, looking to climb the ladder use it too, and know me?
No offence EHO's, I love most of you guys. Honest!
Please don't anybody reply with that 'well they are here to help and advise, so bless em all every one, plus you would not have that attitude unless you have something to hide' Christmas Carol rubbish either!!

Posted By Edward Shyer The problem you have is not from the poster of threads but from the responses that are placed. One example is the Timing thread I (no JAI is not me) placed last Friday it was almost immediately removed because most of the responders did not believe the authenticity of the thread. This could be understandable as it was a Friday and people sometimes use this day for joviality.
However the postings I have placed recently with regards to my workplace are in fact scenarios that I have encountered in recent years for instance the Timing thread was based on an actual call centre that as recently as six months ago was using this same procedure as standard.
Another scenario I presented (Paint removal) was an actual incident that I came across where four Polish guys were stripping paint off in an enclosed room using a substance and scraping off paint on the wall.
Unfortunately these are only some of the instances of blatant bad H&S practice that does go on in this world but these go on unnoticed because they are not good press (unlike the bonkers conkers) as they show the true reasons for the need for H&S
So by dismissing a thread as a joke and more importantly the perpetrator of the thread please bear the above paragraph in mind when responding. It is probably down to interpretation and what may appear to be a joke could in fact be serious as someone has mentioned some peoples writing manor could be interpreted wrongly.
With regards to the comments for a separate “chat” arena could the moderators please look at this as I feel it would be a good idea as Friday is a wind down (or is that a wind up) day and be of benefit to users of the forum as a de stressor before the weekend.
Regards Ted

Posted By gham Mark, sorry "Ted"
You are right, have seen such places, perhaps you should word it more seriously the unfortunate thing is that no person on this site would beleive such stories.
Like my GF worked on a place which did not allow you to eat your lunch anywhere on site unless you bought it from their canteen. and the time thing worked the same way it might have been the same place
her new place the boss sets of the fire extinguishers to prove that they still work and says things like that fire doors blocked up cause we dont use it as a fire door any more... the make carcases for cabinet out of Chip board and MDF, not ventilation not guards on machines i could go on and on
The question is when it is so abviously wrong ......

Hi All,
I can't see what all the fuss is about. We have a chat forum to be used to chat. It doesnt imply that you cant be frivolous on a Friday, or any other day for that matter. It also doesnt imply that it cant be used to get advice, opinions, answers, even arguments or just plain "whats the weather doing?" type "chat" but thats what we, as a group, use it for. I'm sure theres something somewhere in the guidlines that can be interpreted to apply to all scenarios and therefore have the thread removed, but what would we gain? The other option would be having individual threads for each of the scenarios but again, what would be the point. Why cant we accept that we are not all the same and if some others want to bring a little non sensical claptap to the forum in the hope of providing enjoyment or frustartion to others, then so long as no one gets personal, whats the harm? And no-one forces anyone else to participate in any threads...........so perhaps its time to take a deep breath and..........chill a little. There's no wonder that H+S gets such bad press if we are all seen as serious, know it all experts who have no sense of humour. Bring on Friday....
Holmezy
looking forward to alcoholoclock.....
