Hi
At a recent H&S Breakfast meeting a Chief Fire Officer was waving a copy of PAS 79 around saying that it layed out the format for carrying out fire RA and can be purchased for £99. Are we turning our back on "Fire Safety an Employers Guide" for carrying fire RA? as this is the guidance we have used to carry out our RA. Has anyone used PAS 79 and what is the feedback? Or has anyone got a electronic copy of the PAS or know of a website where I can download or view it.?

You can view a brochure about the document on the BSI site but I don't think you will get a copy of the document without paying for it!

I believe this publication is independent and I have heard it being recommended by other organisations, I don’t imagine it is there to replace the “Fire Safety an Employers Guide” but another form of helping the responsible person or nominated person complete a fire risk assessment, in some cases (please don’t start the competency thing).
I did a Google and found it a third cheaper electronically:

The first thing is that PAS 79 is only one recommended methodology. It sets out a method for carrying out a fire risk assessment. Many fire professionals do not agree with the format. Having said that I have based my fire risk assessment templates on the format used and I personally think it is a very good methodology. I have even put together a training course for fire risk assessments based on the recommended methodology.
PAS 79 recommends a 9 step process:-
1. obtain relevant information about the building, occupants and processes;
2. identify fire hazards and means for elimination or control;
3. assess the likelihood of fire;
4. determine the current fire precautions in the building;
5. look at the fire safety management;
6. assess the likely consequences of fire to life
7. based on the above make an assessment of the fire risk;
9. define the review period.
Obviously each section can be broken down further into sub-headings but it is a very methodical look at all areas.
regards
Shaun

It may be possible to view the document at your local reference library. My local library subscribe to BSI and you can log on using their computers and view documents. They are only allowed to print a small percentage of the document for you though. Use of the computer may be chargable.

Hi
I was at the IOSH seminar yesterday and a question was raised about PAS 79 being the 'mantra' for Fire Risk Assessments. The answer was that they do not recommend a layout only that the Fire Risk Assesment should be - and I quote 'Suitable and Sufficent'.

Shaun, thanks for your posting about the nine step approach. This looks fairly straight forward to me.
Thi sinformation will be useful when I review our risk assessments

It has been pointed out to me in a private email that I missed step 8 in the nine step process above:-
8. formulate and document an action plan
