Posted By Aidan Toner This presenter is in a critical condition.Top Gear has been discussed at great lenght on this site (pros and cons). Those discussions are here and are on record. Now is not the time to revisit those discussions-Lets just all agree that we wish him a full recovery.

Posted By Richard Altoft Fully concur, every serious injury at work deserves our fullest sympathy to the injured person and to their family and friends and to all those involved who after every serious incident inevitably feel so much anguish. R

Posted By Merv Newman We might be H&S clipboards but I admire a man who will, sometimes, put his life on the line. Just for fun. Is there not a safety person alive who doesn't, sometimes, imagine themselves doing 300 mph down the M1 ? Or getting around the M25 in less than 25 minutes ? Yeehah ! (as they say) Sorry Merv

Posted By Gilles27 Absolutely agree. I wish Hamster the best and his family. If he does leave us he will have gone doing what he loved. The investigation is where I may have a problem with the (no doubt very public) findings. It could be like Senna and turn into a beast that removes all fun from stuff. BBC learned from the Noel Edmonds thing I am sure so I am sure the risk assessment was excellent and everything evaluated. Volenti non fit injuria will surely not apply. I personally hope conkers bonkers doesn't kick in. Anybody who isn't on my wavelength, please do a google on my login name. God bless Richard, family, Gilles and all who have and will continue to take risks doing what they choose to do. The fact you can get paid for it nowadays is even better for those can do it for work. This may provoke loads of abuse to me, but please think carefully about who he is, what he is and why he did it. Getting hurt falling off scaffolding is a completely different universe. Hope you make it Richard. Jon aka Gilles27

Posted By Stupendous Man Indeed, best wishes to Richard Hammond. I think that most who take part in motorsports (myself included) fully understand the risks involved. However, we still don't believe that it will happen to us. I do hope that we will see Richard back on the screen in the future.

Posted By Rochelle Cartmell I totally agree with the postings above. On the news this morning it said that he sufered a brain injury which although gave the doctors concern they expect him to make a full recovery. I do hope so. I love Top Gear and think that the Hamster, James and Jeremy work very well together. And yes I'd love to be paid driving highly charged cars at speed for a living.

Posted By J Knight Hi Folks, Yes we do need risk takers, and I wish him well. However, I've spent the last 6 years working around brain injured people and I wouldn't sadly be too hopeful for a 'full' recovery, John

Posted By Kesp Best wishes also to the many many people who are killed each day on our roads because people drive to fast. Oh and best wishes also to the families of those who are killed on our roads everyday by people who drive to fast. And a big big thanks to the Doctors and Nurses who have to put people back together again following car crashes. You play with fire you get your fingers burnt. SPEED KILLS!!

Posted By Tabs Top gear used to be for bored petrol heads, now it is for anyone who likes a giggle and controversial (often tongue-in-cheek) digs at the establishment. I hope to God that he returns and continues to entertain me. It would be too sad to contemplate Clarkeson and May without Hamster as a balance. There are so many BBC H&S people that we have all probably met one at least, and looking at the responders on site I think the show's hits at H&S are often bluster rather than serious comment. I wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Posted By Noah Norrak likewise, i wish Richard Hammond a full recovery however, with regards to risk, surely the reward has to outweigh the risks? risking your life to save your own child from drowning risking your life to fight terrorism risking your life to advance medicine/fight disease but risking your life to be a UK land speed record holder... lets not make him out to be a hero, when he's just an entertainer

Posted By Renny Thomson Kesp, please don't be a Troll. Better - "Excessive speed kills" or "Inappropriate speed kills" otherwise we'd never go anywhere. FYI the incident that resulted in Richard Hammond's injuries occurred not on the public roads, probably under well controlled conditions, with appropriate safeguards and precautions. All that we H&S professionals and motorsports/motoring enthusiasts can hope for is that he makes as full a recovery as possible and that there is no knee-jerk backlash from the media or others. You may also wish to visit http://www.hse.gov.uk/risk/principles.htm for some informed comments on sensible risk management.

Posted By Tony Brunskill Kesp, If he had been doing 300 mph on the A1079 I would agree with your sentiment. As he was not well........ Electricity kills kids flying kites...Ban it People drown in swimmong pools.....Ban it People die from hypothermia out walking.....Ban it People die from adverse reactions to medicines....Ban it Or maybe take a professional view of the benefits and utility these things provide.

Posted By J Knight Sorry Tabs, don't get the bit about Top Gear being 'anti-estblishment' in any way; Clarkson went to public school and writes for the Times, and car companies represent the biggets accumulations of capital on the planet. Top Gear practically is the establishment, just perhaps not the polite establishment of Whitehall, if you ask me, John
