Posted By songwriter Hi all, i completed and gained Nebosh and was fortunate enough to get a h&s job even though i had very little experience. I really want to do well as they almost give me a free reign to get on with it. can anyone give me a structure to work to in simple english as i am working in the dark and want to get it right. There was basically nothing in place so i have to start at the beginning. They were good enough to trust me, the least i can do is get it right. I work in a transport environment with some offices scattered around the country to visit. thanks for any help. Neboshman

Posted By sagalout Your request is very big. I would suggest that first you go to the HSE website www.hse.gov.uk and do some research there. It is a very good site and has a lot of free stuff that will help you get startd and gain a more focused view of the task ahead. (based on UK practice) For example, there is a section for new businesses that outlines some systems for h&s, maybe they would be useful for you if nothing exists, or you can look up transport safety and other things. If you need help with understanding how to apply the guidance, come back and ask a simpler question about one aspect of your work, I am sure we will help if we can. Good luck

Posted By JayJay Hi ! Congratulations for passing your NEBOSH, now the hard work begins i'm afraid. Most Health & safety bods have the help of someone else when they start out but i'm afraid you're IT. Start at the top and look what existing, if any, procedures your company have, especially the Safety Management System side of it, i.e. Policy, Organisation, Risk assessments, training etc. The lists endless I'm afraid but don't despair cause there's always help especially on this forum. if you want a chat give me your number and i'll help if i can. Posted By Ron Hunter You mention you're in the transport business. I wonfer if your Co. are members of FTA (Freight Transport Association - they have a good website)? FTA could be engaged to conduct a H&S audit to give you a headstart. No man is an island after all, and this may be an opportune time to broach the issue of a health and safety budget with your employer! I have no association with the FTA

Posted By Malcolm Hogarth songwriter. Congratulations on your new job and welcome to the world of health and safety. I have found this site very useful in clarifying things and confirming my own thoughts on subjects. However be prepared for lots of different responses! Without wishing to appear too harsh, I am a little concerned that you have landed a position whilst admitting that you do not know very much about it. That being said you obviously impressed the interviewer(s)and they had enough faith in you to appoint you. What happens when they start coming to you for advice though! I concur with the other respondees and would recommend you embark on your next lot of learning, including familiarisation of the industry. Join local IOSH and other health and safety forums and use this site. Best of luck, Malcolm
