Posted By Alex Ryding Hi all, Did anyone see the programme on TV last night about the M25? This episode was about the people who maintain the roads, and VOSA doing inspections on lorries checking for overloading and road worthiness. Towards the end of the show there was a lorry parked in a lay-by which had been stopped because it was overloaded. The driver, a German guy, was told he would have to repack his lorry due to uneven loading across his axles. Where they had pulled over his lorry, a forklift truck was not permitted to get access to him to move the load, and, as he was overloaded he wasn’t permitted to move the lorry. The load the guy was carrying was thick sheets of plywood and if he wanted to move from the spot he had to move the load by hand! The image they showed on telly was the curtains from the top and sides removed so the guy could get easy access to the load and the guy stood on top of it (a few inches short of the theoretical lorry roof), he pulling these large planks by hand. Now please correct me if I’m wrong (and I hope I am). Did misunderstand what I saw, or did I see one government body basically making a guy do ridiculous things, regarding manual handling and working at height? If I saw what I think I saw, surely the evidence is present to prosecute VOSA for such dangerous act.

Posted By John Lewis First off I did not see the programme. If he was moving plywood in a layby, then presumably the wind created by passing vehicles could make the plywood sheets into large wooden projectiles with the potential to get onto the road.

Posted By GJB I didn't see it! But really wish I had!! From what you say, it could be a case of the right-hand and left-hand not having a conversation?... But isn't that called 'Real Life'?! As long as the particular departments can 'tick' the box, they can clock off and go back to their homes, confident in the knowledge that they have achieved their daily objective! How many other organisations do that?

Posted By Merv Newman On the French auto-routes we often see heavily loaded cars, sometimes with a meter high load on the roof rack, heading for the southern ports connecting with North Africa. (never actually seen one with granny on top. But there are stories) Police practice is to escort them to the next service station (could be up to 40 km) Then get them to sort out the loading. I suppose that they either have to abandon some of it or phone a friend. And I have seen FLTs unloading crashed or severely broken down trucks. Takes hours, means shutting down a lane or two, but it can be done. If you want to. Merv

Posted By ian As a tanker driver for a large company we get stopped by VOSA pretty often. Let me tell you they are a bunch of animals. They think they can talk to drivers like sh@t and get away with it, WRONG guys, You only have to call the police and they will sort it out.(supposedly)There is a bad vibe between VOSA and the police at the moment because they think they can undermine the police. We have to carry an orange card and before we even open the window to them have to check out their name and numbers. they don't like it but it puts the cat amongst the pidgin's with them. Saying that some police are the same so they get the same treatment too.
