I was sickened to see, on national TV the female contestant in the wheel chair having to be lifted out of the room where she had successfully auditioned during last weeks show.
Can the provision of a ramp not be considered reasonable adjustments by ITV? Is the X factor not making enough money to provide a simple ramp and preserve a bit of dignity for the contestant?
I hope someone in authority was watching and takes action over this outrage.

Hi Steve, I didn't see the programme...
A person not in a wheelchair can choose to use either the stairs or the lift... in the same way a person in a wheelchair can choose if they want to use a ramp or be lifted. I understand your angle on this but remember she may have opted for this mode of removal.
I'd have thought this issue was more of a MH than a dignity one?
Regards

Steve,
I noted the same. I agree entirely. Given the money this show makes and the fact that they were well aware of her participation and disability I think you make a good point. Maybe they are thinking of the sympathy vote, but that does not fall in line with her attitude toward disability. Incidentally I thought she was damn good too.

Sigh!!! isnt it sad that given the high risks associated with work that we have time to discuss this and be H&S critics. This is why we as a profession have a bad name as killjoys. yes i guess if you want to be jobsworths, they should have had a ramp, a stenna stairleft or possibly a bionic attachement of some sort, but then again the person didnt seem to be in to much distress. i think the fact a disabled person was able to perform and make the grade given the predudices surrounding disablities is one to be applauded rather than harping on about whether she had to be lifted onto the stage or not.
But then H&S officers have to have something to compain about or they'd be out of a job.

H&S people have to have something to IMPROVE or they'd be out of a job.
There is nothing demeaning in being carried up or down stairs or steps. It just happens. OK, there was no ramp and ITV could have held the interview downstairs or on the lawn but maybe the lady was showing she did not require that level of consideration.
Why not ask her ?

All very commendable thoughts
- why no ramp?
- the individual may have wanted to be carried?
- what were the building designers thinking about?
- what about manual handling issues?
But is not the funanmental issue that of the questionnable judgement of the programme makers who sought to film this maneuver, and then broadcast it?
What value or purpose did it fulfil? Apart perhaps, from a cheap trick to generate publicity where in reality there need be none.
I recall press attention surrounding a previous series - will the fat girl win? This time, it's how's the cripple doing?
I would have thought that the Broadcasting Complaints Commission or Standards Authority should be getting out of their comfy chairs and doing something positive to make sure UK braodcasting rises above cheap tricks like that.

Ian,
I absolutely agree.
Gary Orange,
Sadly Gary the points we were making appear to have gone over your head. It is the law of the land, the law is the "MINIMUM" standard, if organisations making millions such as this show can ignore it what chance is there of establishing a culture that takes these things into account. Not only did they fail to address the issue but then broadcast it to millions of people. I agree with Ian probably for publicity purposes.
I made reference to the this girl's personal view but I did not assume to know what it was, unlike you apparently. If the law is inconvenient.....tough. Sadly I do not feel the future is Bright or Orange. I feel your comments are offensive to those individuals that suffer disabilities and have struggled long and hard to achieve a decent minimum standard.
