Posted By April Catherine Harvey I wonder if someone could tell me how wide a door should be for disabled access in the event of a fire. The person in question is in the room at all times. Thanks April

Posted By Bob Shillabeer Hi April,
The best place to get this information is the Approved Document B Fire Safety supporting the Building Regulations 2000 this down-loadable free from the Internet by searching approved documents.
Basically it gives the widths of escape routes. You don't give details of the persons disability but I assume it is a mobility problem and the person concerned uses a wheelchair.
The table gives the following minimum requirements max 50 people minimum width 750mm 110 people 850mm, 220 people 1050 minimum and more than 220 an additional 5mm per person. You need to take account of turning corners etc as a wheelchair will need more room to turn and don't forget things such as door furniture which can reduce the width; this is normally ignored for able bodied but can cause serious problems for the disabled.
Try and get the escape route as wide as possible is the final answer. Hope this helps. Bob.

there is guidance as given by other respondents above but surely the door needs to be as wide as is necessary to evacuate the disabled person. The guidance is there purely as guidance but circumstances are not always the same and you must assess the exit width and decide if it is sufficient to enable safe evacuation of the person concerned.

Posted By andymak Would the widths quoted above also apply where items are being stored in a corridor which is used as an evacuation route?
