Posted By Malcolm Hogarth Hello all, An organisation has provided a small gymnasium for staff use. Can any of you point me in the right direction to find information in putting together an induction? In the meantime I am trying to contact the company that installed the equipment. Thanks, Malcolm.

Posted By Glyn Phillips Malcolm, my employer is also considering the possibility of providing an on-site fitness room (gymnasium). Whilst doing the risk assessment the requirement for suitable training, info etc. came up. Without suitably competent people on site I have suggested that the local gym could provide the 'competent' person to do this for us, on our site. There is a cost to us for providing this induction training but is relatively minor when compared to the cost of equipment, building alterations, etc. Do you have a local gym facility that could help you out? Posted By Kieran J Duignan Remember to give attention to avoid a (valid) claim of INDIRECT unfair discrimination on grounds of age and gender. You can do this in two ways a. ensuring that equipment can be adjusted for different age groups and both genders b. providing outline fitness and exercise programmes with normative data for males and females of at least five age groups. To manage the risk of discrimination on grounds of disability, it's a good idea to offer to conduct a person-specific risk assessment having regard for his/her disability. It's a bit of an investment of time to design this into your induction. But it's an investment worth the time, if only to avoid the far, far more time-consuming business of responding to a claim of unfair discrimination and dealing with adverse publicity if one of the lobby groups choose to highlight shortcomings (as the DRC are currrently doing publicly in relation to Thistle Hotels.)

Posted By Morgan Healey We use a Qualified Gym Instructor to carry out the induction for all employees who wish to use the Gym. You can find a local Instructor by searching the Register of Excercise Professionals database on their website. http://www.exerciseregister.org Cost is minimal and negotiable to suit requirements.
