Did not see (and cannot find on the Internet) the article you mention. Do you have details?

Further details of the story can be found at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/...ucestershire/6055652.stm
Basically, the accused put on a latex glove and shoved his hand in his ex wife's mouth (after stabbing her new boyfriend). He knew the victim had a latex allergy and expected anaphylactic shock or other fatal reaction.
As we all know, that's not usually how latex allergies work and the victim was in no mortal danger from the latex. However, intent was proved and the accused was found guilty of attempted murder.
I wouldn't have thought this would have any bearing on h and s prosecutions regarding allergies as here there was an attempt to cause harm rather than a failing not to.

The report states that she suffered ulcers etc. in her mouth after this experience.
The report does not state what type of glove he was wearing. Normally sensitisation to latex protein only occurs from the use of powdered, high free protein, single-use latex gloves, i.e. the thin ones used in laboratories and hospitals. Of course, if they were powdered gloves, it is highly probable that the outer surface could have been contaminated from a spread of the powder whilst the gloves were inside the box in which they normally come.
In theory it might be possible for the woman's saliva to extract some protein from the glove, but I would have thought the exposure time was too short for this.
It is possible that the ulcers etc. were in part (or totally) a psychosomatic reaction. Similar reactions have been described by Prof. Gieler of the Department of Psychosomatic Dermatology in Germany. (I can get almost everyone's skin to itch when I run one of our courses, simply by showing a picture of head lice and discussing these. Watch them all scratch their head!)

Thanks Calum & Chris,
Chris has the reason for my interest i.e. the fast reaction time. The attacker was reported as quoting:"You will be dead in 4 mins" which may have come from this persons apparent practice of SM with the victim !!!
Regards psychosomatic reactions to head lice, I can only but agree, scratch, scratch. On the subject of severe allergies we have had a report of a client having a skin contact reaction to nitrile gloves(Is nothing safe !!)

The type 1 reaction (contact urticaria) to the protein in natural rubber latex can actually be quite quick, often as little as a few minutes, generally never longer than 30.
As far as nitrile gloves are concerned, I am getting frequent reports on type IV reactions (allergic contact dermatitis) to the chemicals used in the manufacture of nitrile gloves, usually the thin, single use type. Most of these are the same chemicals as are used in natural rubber latex gloves, where they do not seem to cause as many problems.
Indeed, I have clients who have changed from natural rubber latex (mistakenly in my view) to nitrile, who never had a problem with the latex, but who now are suffering from numbers of people with allergies to the nitrile gloves.
My suspicion is (although technically not yet investigated) that bonding of the chemicals in the nitrile is not as complete as in the natural rubber latex and thus exposure of the skin is increased.
Regards
Chris
