Posted By Eric PD Hi Can anyone tell me if it is a legal requirement to have the periodic electrical mains wiring inspection of your premises completed by a NICEIC approved contractor or can any Joe Soap electrician undertake it as long as they are competent? If the latter applies then any ideas of what is classed as competent in this case? thanks eric

Posted By Peter Rose I don't mean to state the obvious, but NICEIC or ECA enrolment, would be proof of competence. Electricians can use non NICEIC/ECA forms for testing, but proof of competence could be difficult. I would personally look for C & G 2381 (BS 7671) and C & G 2391 (Inspection and Testing). Easier to use an NICEIC/ECA approved contractor. Peter

Posted By George Wedgwood The reason for inspection must be qualified - is it part of your SMS, to satisfy the Local Authority or for insurance purposes? The appropriate body may demand specific competence to satisfy their own internal rules and conditions. Competence would normally be accepted as an experienced electrician who had a relavant inspection certificate from (say) the IET (was the IEE) or relevant course on the 'IEE Wiring regulations'. Who can dispute this if an adequate inspection has ben done, recommenations been written and certificate been properly filled in? Only after a fire for example could a forensic examination prove that something had been missed in the inspection. In the past, I have had to help a reputable company inspector to properly identify defects! The actual registration with a trade body like NICEIC etc does not actually signify competence but normally shows that an employer is somewhat responsible and had their qualifications checked.
