Posted By TONY I would like to train our site managers to enable them to inspect scaffold and records their findings. I did my training a few years back and as far as i'm aware the same things are applicable. Toe boards in place Guard rails set out correctly Sufficient amount of ties Debris etc removed at handover Ladders secured and suitable for the task No pertruding poles Holes and gaps where a person called fall secured Boards secured Open corners protected Weather conditions Competence of persons working on scaffold Alterations Can anyone think of anything else or recommend a suitable brief for my Site Managers. Thanks

Posted By Salus Hi Tony, generally scaffolds should be plumb, look along the standards. Horizontal sections should be horizontal. vertigal, diagonal and horizontal sections should be at regular spacings. The scaffold itself should look symmetrical, not all "higgledey-piggledey" (for want of two words) Standards should sit on base plates which are situated on firm foundations. Joins in standards and ledgers should be staggered, not occur in the same bay. transomes and putlogs should support boards at the required distances depending on thicknees of boards Platform widths, for different types of work or inspection only types of fittings used. Info on fans if used. Requirements for hoists (goods / passenger)or gin wheels which may be necessary. The loadings which may be imposed on each bay you could include info on the types of cards now issued to scaffolders for competency. Give them some info on SG4, fall arrest equipment when erecting, dismantling and altering scaffolds The two main types of scaffolds, independant and putlog, plus towers hope this is of some help

Posted By Whojoe The following NASC (National Association of Scaffolding Contractors) documents are very useful as a point of reference: Scaffolders and Users Guide to Safe Access Scaffolding TG20:05 Technical Guidance on the use of BS EN12811/1 (also by NASC) SG4:You (User Guide to SG4:05 - Preventing Falls in Scaffolding and Falsework)

Posted By Whojoe Correction, BS EN 12811-1 is (obviously) not by NASC (rearranged format of posting and forgot to delete the bracketed part....)

Posted By Martyn Hendrie Tony, Whilst the responses so far have contained good information don't forget that the law requires the person formally inspecting "working platforms" (scaffolds) to be competent. Without wanting to re-open a debate on competence those doing the formal inspection require more than just training. (Apologies if you already knew that, not trying to teach you to "suck eggs")
