Hi there,

Can anybody out there help me a little with this? Just back from visiting one of our older sport centres and noted that some of the sockets in the halls are metal plated. Are these safe? Should they be plastic? Some are quite loose and I have asked for them to be secured and checked to confirm if they are safe to be used. But should they be getting used?

Cheers

Joe

I'm no electrician so claim no competency here. However, if the circuits are correctly wired and earthed and the most recent system test and inspection has OK'd them...

I have recently had my house re-wired and inspected and passed by a competent electrician - metal sockets included.

I hope I'm correct here and no doubt someone with the requisite knowledge will resond.

Hi Joe,

Metal clad electrical sockets are quite common in areas where impact damage is likely as they have a higher degree of strength than plastic. The metal frame has an internal earth fixing to allow the socket to be wired to the circuits earth system so if the sockets metal housing should become live the MCB or fuse will isolate the circuit. All this of course depends upon the integrity of the electrical wiring circuit, which should be checked every five years. The sockets should be tight to the wall though, loose screws are not good.

Hi Joe,
In addition, the earth cable should be an unbroken link to the lug on the back box to stop the continuity depending on "loose screws".
