Posted By darren booth passenger in the last van did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt? this film is from manchester, these measures are in place to stop unauthorised use of bus lanes and the like. these people have ignored all warning signs to try and gain an advantage(you can see the illuminated signs at the start of the video), which didnt work.i have little sympathy.this film is a cut version of a film on youtube, the full version showing a little more detail, such as the silver car reversing and waiting for a bus to tailgate .......crazy!

Posted By Tony Brunskill Hi Morgan, There is an issue with these types of device. In theory they are a good idea but signage is key. They are often used in city centres and the amount of street furniture and signs can be bewildering. This aligned to the fact that there a lot of pedestrians about, the visual and other marketing messages displayed by the commercial premises and distractions inside the vehicle can overwhelm the driver. I can see why mistakes are made. The video obviously only picks on those that have deliberately tried to pass but how many innocently collide with these things? It may be a simple balance of risk collisions v dead pedestrians and they may be justified but do they need to be so robust that they cause airbag deployment.

Posted By Peter Longworth Replied to this on one of the other forums. These are devices that are in common use to block off bus lanes and allow access for buses etc. Don't try to use a bus lane and you won't have a problem. As long as there is adequate warning such as signage then there is no health and safety issue as far as I can see. It's exactly the same as people who complain about speed cameras. Speeding is against the law. If you don't exceed the speed limit you won't get fined.

Posted By Melanie Kavanagh If you watch the last clip of the white van, you will see the outline that the driver's head leaves on the windscreen. Ouch! I had no idea that these were in use in Manchester. I suppose it would be quite easy to turn down one of these streets if you were lost and in a flap, inadvertently concentrating more on looking for street names rather than on the road ahead (not that I've ever done that of course!) I did a similar thing whilst reversing on a supermarket car park, only my husband swears that the bollard had been there all the time.....!

Posted By David Bannister As a (near) Manchester resident and regular visitor to tthe City Centre I can confirm that these bollards are well-signed and very obvious. I personally detest driving anywhere near the Centre because of the very clear attitude of the local council as anti-car by installing a wide-ranging package of traffic blockages. There are plenty of Car Parks, except from now 'till January due to Xmas shopping. Nevertheless, the rising bollards will trap motorists who insist on being foolish and attempt to enter the prohibited zones. It makes for funny viewing. I'm hoping to see one live soon. As for H&S issues - I may split my sides! Does this count? Have a happy Friday.
