Posted By Cat Hi all Do you need specific qualifications to train a range of h&s courses: risk assessment, accident investigation, manual handling, fire marshal etc? Or does having NEBOSH and train the trainer find you competent to deliver in house? Thanks Cat

Posted By Phillipe Having a Nebosh qualification in my opinion does not give you carte blanche to undertake training in just about everything. Yes it makes you competant as a safety professional (diploma and higher) but looking back on the Nebosh course work for manual handling and all the other topics, it is more of a broad brush across the whole subject matter rather than targetting a specific element. Accident investigation, unless you are trained in FTA's and other such models is not simply a case of interviewing a few people and writing down their statements, it is much more than that. Basic fire marshalling you can get away with having the Nebosh qualification, but any more than that you really do need to have further backup either educationally or with lots of experience. There are many specific courses out there that allow you to become specified as a trainer in specific areas such as manual handling. I have CMIOSH and a PG Dip in H&S however I will always employ a specialist when it comes to this sort of specific training. Yes, I understand the fundamentals and the principals but I am not a specific specialist in training, that should be left to professionals in their field. I am happy to train all day long on general H&S and risk assessment and such like but everyone should know their limitations...Noise surveys for example, would touch them with a barge pole, always best left to someone who understands the theory and methodology rather than just the action levels and PPE side of things.

Posted By Phillipe having read through that again I reckon the use of specialist and specific has been specifically over used...I will specifically attempt not to use the term specialist or specific again... Phil

Posted By Ian Langston The word here is surely competence. Not competence in ones subject, but competence to train! What would you say is the minimum qualification required to train? This is not a stupid question, because get it wrong and the argument you are likely to face would be on the quality and ability of your trainer to train, not the syllabus that he / she was supposed to be covering. Just because some one is an expert in their subject does not mean that they can train adults. Poor quality education in H&S could cause real problems for an organisation. Thus it is essential to be certain and satisfied that your trainers / educationalists actually have the necessary skills and abilities to provide the service that you have employed them for. If you are unable to assess the quality of the training provider, course, syllabus or methodology involved speak with the IOSH PD Dept. as they are likely to be able to assist with relevent training.
