Posted By Steve99Jones When it comes to safety signage, I believe that size matters!!
However, I have recently discovered a site where the Emergency exit signage is so small (255mm x 80mm) that it has made me concerned. The Health and Safety (safety signs and signals) Regs 1996 do not as far as I am aware specify minimum sizes, therefore does anyone have any guidance information on the minimum size of such signs? and yes I appreciate that it should be subject to a risk assessment, which is exactly what I am currently doing.
Any guidance information or advice would be greatly welcomed.
Many thanks
Steve

Posted By Ken Taylor Basically, you have got to be able to 'read' the sign from the distance at which you would need to be able to do so. The sign companies have some tables relating sign size to reading distance.

Posted By Ali You may possibly find guidance in the British Stds relating to size.

Posted By Vernon Kay There is no standard size. It should be fully readable by the appropriate people, so taken into account when performing your risk assessments. Obviously the colours and shape are standard.

Posted By Mike Blease Steve, Obtain a catalogue from a sign supplier and see what they say. Recommendations in the stocksign catalogue include as follows:
300x100 viewing distance up to 10 metres 600x200 viewing distance up to 20 metres 1200x400 viewing distance up to 40 metres
The above is for rectangular signage, but the catalogue is easy enough to follow and if you were still unsure the sales team would keep you right, like of lot of H&S products if you get the information from reputable suppliers it is unlikely to be incorrecct and will save you a bit of time.

Posted By Ashley Wood Steve, Have a look in BS5499 as this is the signs standard. Also, the height of the sign is important. For example, if it is mounted on a wall then it should be mounted at a height of 1700mm - 2000mm, with the bottom of the sign being at 1700mm, no lower. Also, are there any disabled persons using the building, again this needs to be taken into account.

Posted By Nantida Hi,
I am from Thailand and new to this discussion forum. I have stumbled onto your thread via google search.
I was also looking for information on emergency exit sign size and visibility distance. There is a paper that might be of interest to you:
MS Wright, GK Cook and GMB Webber, Visibility of Four Exit Signs...
Part of the paper discusses the issue of viewing distance as specified in BS 5266.
Hope this may be of some use.
