I seem to recall being told that when providing hearing protection they should not reduce the noise level for the wearer below a certain dB. Problem is I can't remember what that figure is.

Am I dreaming or does someone out there know the figure?

The HSE recommend that the estimated noise level at the eardrum should not be less that 75 dB(A).

BS EN 458:2004 states that employees should not be subjected to over protection. Hearing protection supplied should not where practicable, reduce noise levels below 70dB(A) at the ear. Hearing protection should be chosen that reduces employees noise exposure below 80dB(A) Lep.d. Where over protection is likely, any extra risk posed by lowered levels of hearing must be assessed e.g. inability to hear lift trucks or fire alarms etc.
