I am concerned about some of the responses posted on this forum. I have been using this forum on and off for the past three or four years. More frequently over the past 9 months and I have now signed up as a user.
I have some experience in health and safety and
I have some NEBOSH qualifications (Diploma this year) but I certainly don't know all the answers. I must admit that this chat forum provides me with an opportunity to learn.
I am always asking questions, which may be considered banal (but not to me) and I would like to think that 'my health and safety colleagues' would rally to my call, as I would if I could help
Please, let's be positive to all posts on this forum and reply if we have something constructive to add. We are all here to learn and develop.
Chris Tarrant often says "The questions are only easy if you know the answer".
I was also under the impression that health and safety is not only knowing the answers to questions but also about winning the hearts and minds of individuals... Perhaps I'm wrong and I'm in the wrong profession

Mark,
You're not the first person to express similar sentiments, and I have to say I heartily agree. There is no shame in asking for help, after all, one of the tests of competence is knowing your own limitations; I know mine, and if I need help I ask for it. Most responses on this forum are polite and helpful (sometimes they're humorous, but I don't see any harm in that provided its good natured), and to be honest I don't see many negative posts nowadays, but people still do evidently, and there is no place for it really,
John

Mark,
I acknowledge your point and hope that the majority of posters are at least friendly and civil.
Occasionally, a poster goes rogue and the moderators will deal with them in line with the AUG's and if applicable the Professional Code of Conduct may be referred to.
If you ever have a complaint about a specific posting feel free to contact the moderators on webteam@iosh.co.uk and they will deal with it in accordance with the AUG's.

I believe ALL messages posted on the forum should be screened by a MODERATOR prior to posting. That was people will not have to filter through the insults, repeated messages and poor content. I am sure users of the forum would not mind waiting perhaps half an hour for a response to be posted if it means that the posts are all relevant.
What do others think???

Tommy, I do not believe every post needs to be screened before being allowed on the forums, it would be unworkable.
All I can say is that some posts may appear to be flippant but I am sure they are not always intended to be so.
I have been posting on these forums for 7 years now and I note some of the "new" posters appear to be mischievous.
For example I answered a basic question yesterday on First aid but a poster attcked the person for asking a basic question in the first place.

Tommy,
Although I have never been a moderator, I suspect that it would not be practical to preview every post. Who is going to sit up at 3:00am to monitor members who post overnight.
As has been said before, we are a professional organisation, who should be more than capable of regulating ourselves. Those who fail to meet the required standards are easily dealt with through normal channels.

Yes I have seen comments from some of the "mischievous" users. They ought to be banned.

I would like to start by fully agreeing with everything you say Mark. I have been in and around safety for about 10 years 6 of those being hardcore.
It really gets me down with the flippant responses some people give because and I include people with 25 years in the field.
In my opinion anyone in safety who says or thinks they know everything is delusional they make think they do but I don't believe it is possible. It isn't just about knowing the answers its about where to find them. One of my places is here.
I often think I know an answer and i may often be right but it is nice to use this forum as a sounding board for stuff. We all can work in company's where we can get blinded by negativity to safety or questioning what you say. It is comforting to come here from time to time, post a question and get support. That to me is the real benefit to this forum for me.
"We are amongst friends and people who know what we go through day to day, We must never forget that we are a breed apart like a goalkeeper in a football team only other goalkeepers know what they go through".
I was a goalkeeper too by the way, and they say you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper, maybe you have to be mad to be in safety lol

Some of the responses I have seen to questions asked on these forums could be seen as a slap down to the person asking.
Example: Last week IOSH V IIRSM. One Response was Oh! not this one again!
Not very constructive.
This type of response could result in people not using the forum in the future.
I was once offered some advice which was.
The only stupid question is the one you never ask!
And
If you Don't have anything constructive to say!
Don't say anything!
Good advise from an Ex-USAF Fire Officer.
These forums are hear to help others and share knowledge, so prehaps thats what we should be doing whether its the same quaestions or not it may be relevant to others.

"Example: Last week IOSH V IIRSM. One Response was Oh! not this one again!"
I can fully understand this post and many others like it when people ask questions, often quite easy which have been asked 20 times before and sometimes are on the same page.
I think the "search forums" link should be in fontsize=16 color=red /bold

Would it be an idea for everyone who has 3 messages "cannot be displayed" due to breaches of the rules, to be banned from the forum permanently unless they appeal in writing to a moderator? The way this forum is moderated leaves a great deal to be desired compared to comparible forums on the internet. It is like going back 5 years in terms of security and moderation standards.
Surely there must be patterns to spot repeat offenders on here.

Tommy,
I have had two "this message cannot be diplayed at this time" by trying to help people finding a job (advertising apparently), so therefore by your logic I would be banned if I did it again?

Tommy,
I have had a couple of 'could not be displayed' messages as well; one because a comment I made was interpreted as offensive when I used a common term to describe someone acting outside their employement in a H&S situation; the other was because I then tried to explain my earlier comment only to find that the AUG don't allow comments on moderator's decisions. So I have to say that I can't agree; having a post removed can be for 'technical' or unwitting breaches of AUG rather than purely because a post is deliberatley offensive,

Good point guys, I have just had one removed also for simply copying a section of text from the regulations and posting it in the forum to answer a user's question.
Is it just me or is that a stupid rule???

Come on folks, although I sigh just as loud as anyone else when I see a dumb response (there are more than a few) I don't think we should start having a go at the moderators or the style of the forum.
I do not wish to be vetted before I post. I do not want my subscription fees spent on employing a person to vet messages.
I have not seen anything posted which is anything more than mildly annoying and mildly offensive. Sitting on the train in the morning leads to me being exposed to far worse things. Walking through a shopping centre on a Saturday even more so. Reading a paper gets my blood hotter, and hearing politicians lie to me on breakfast tv even more so.
This is a 'Forum' — ORIGIN Latin, ‘what is out of doors’.
Let's not censor - let's change the behavior of the posters (hmmm... sounds like a H&S approach to a problem).

Hi Tabs,
I agree; I wasn't criticising the moderators by the way; I fully understand why they took the action they did in the posts I had removed. There are AUGs, and we sign up to them when we post, and the speed and responsiveness of this forum is invaluable,

Over the last few days the forum got a bit silly due to let's be honest one person who seems to have calmed down regained password etc.
The key thing is that we shouldn't change our style due to one person, I like the idea that I can get a quick reply to a question without having to wait for a response which is vetted.
Bottom line I know how to report posts which are not constructive.
Let's just keep doing our thing and support the moderators as best we can.

The purpose of the post was to encourage and support those who want to ask questions but who may feel somewhat intimidated.
I am aware that the lack of professionalism has been raised previously and I'm sure the more it is 'attacked', the more likely we can create an environment where one can ask something without fear of ridicule.
The emphasis should be on what is positive and constructive, regardless of the simplicity of the question.
Thanks for your comments

Yes I agree with you Rob. I assume you are referring to the same person as I have in mind! But I cannot type his name due to fear of the message being blocked.
I think users will begin to see the good side of the forum soon.

I think we should just let the moderators get on with the job they have been doing quite adequately. Speaking as someone who has had posts removed on occasion I find that most of their decisions in hindsight have been correct. I do find it rather amusing though that people seem to get out of their prams more for a perceived insult rather than for technically incorrect advice. I would prefer to see more posts removed for giving barking mad advice than from humorous put downs.
If the worst you've ever been called is a "plonker" (or similar) you've done pretty well so far!
What has happened to MarkSMark - he at least had a sense of humour.

I think the problems with people using this site is that most people are assumed to be H&S professionals irregardless of what level of the profession they belong to. So when someone is asking a question that to the majority of users is so basic that all H&S professionals are expected to know and people responding with negative replies it probably due to the individual not realising that this forum is also open to people with no or little H&S experience and are only looking for good advice from the professional body.
With regards to responses from H&S professionals that then generates a heated and sometimes personal debate which then goes off track, it needs to be remembered that the individual seeking the advice isn't interested in petty bickering but good sound advice to resolve their original problem.
Even professionals at the top of their profession can be mistaken in there beliefs of certain topics and may only be half right so instead of playing a game of one upmanship by discrediting the response. It may be better to accept that we are sometimes wrong we never know we may get something positive out of it.
Regards
Ted PosT NoMinal
