Posted By Gareb Hi, I'm new to this forum, so I'm sorry if I repeat old ground, or miss points altogether. I have set up a warehouse for my company which was dealing with leaflets and electrical goods on a small scale. It has run so well up to now that the company want to start bringing more shipments through - ie. turn it in to a proper warehouse operation. What basic info from the IOSH side of things do I need to know follow, and what reading material shall I start off with? Basically any help would be great! Many thanks G

Posted By Phillipe Hi From a warehousing point of view try to get hold of a copy of the HSE Guidance Note HS(G)76 - Health & Safety in Retail and Wholesale Warehouses. This booklet contains lots of information relating to the following areas: - Legal duties - Staff training - Accident reporting - First aid - Environment & welfare - Electrical safety - Occ health - Storage systems - Manual Handling - Mechanical handling - Automated storage and retrieval systems - Vehicle operations - Cold stores - Storage of packaged dangerous substances This will certainly give you some idea of the task you may or may not have. You will also be required to undertake risk assessment for general work, specific hazards, fire safety, manual handling (which in a warehouse there will be some form of handling one would presume), use of fork lift trucks, etc etc. It may be worth your while contacting your local environmental health officer who may be able to assist you in getting started with some of the more technical aspects of things. The HSE website also has plenty of good useful information that you can trawl through. You will need will need a written Safety Policy also providing you employ more than 5 people. Examples of these can be found simply by doing a google search, to pint you in the right direction. The ISBN number for the book is 0-11-885731-2, although you can more than likely download a copy from soemwhere such as the HSE website or TSO website. Hope this may be of some use to you.
