Posted By Carrell I was wondering if someone could help me out with an LEV query I have (or someone who has a copy of HSG54). Does HSG54 expand upon the transport velocities as laid down in HSG37 to give extra minimum velocities for contaminants? I have a report here for paint plant assessment which quotes 6m/s for vapours: a) am not sure if paint mists are vapours or something else? b) can find no reference to 6m/s in my HSG37. (Previous companies have always tested to 15m/s for light dusts which I was also never really sure about). I just want to have some idea of what I'm talking about before I raise my concerns.

Posted By Paul Leadbetter HSG54 does not specify any transport velocities; the only HSE figures are in HSG37, I think. The ACGIH manual recommends 5 - 10 m/s for vapours, 10 - 13 for fumes and 12 - 15 for very fine light dust. Paul

Posted By Tony Brunskill Paint mists are paint mists, paint vapours are paint vapours. Quite often the transport velocity for one will contain the other.

Posted By Richie Carrell, I had to go back to my training notes for this one (Post-graduate Diploma). Common minimum transport velocities: Fumes: 7-10 M/second. Very Fine Light Dusts: 10-25 M/second. Dry Dusts and Powders: 12.5-18 M/second. Average Industrial Dust: 18-20 M/second. Heavy Dusts: 20-23 M/second. Heavy or Moist Dusts: 23-30 M/second. I am pretty sure these hail from the states, (ACGIH) however no reference is made. Hope this helps. Richie

Posted By Carrell Thank you very much all, it has become somewhat clearer now. I have also spoken with the guy who did the tests and drew up the report; he referenced ACGIH also. He explained why he was classing the contaminant as vapour and why he deemed the systems to be "satisfactory", etc. I am quite happy with his response to my concerns (let's hope the HSE see it the same way!).
