Posted By Michael Carroll I have just heard that a new regulation is being brought in stating that working areas such as basement's etc must have some kind of natural lighting. I find this hard to believe as it would not be reasonably practicable to enforce this. Obviously there must be sufficient lighting but it would not always be possible to have natural lighting. has anyone heard of this coming in?? Mike

Posted By steve e ashton Michael: Don't believe I've seen any recent proposal along the lines you suggest - may be some confusion here from a new reader of Regulation 8 of the Workplace Regs 92 which requires suitable and sufficient lighting to be provided for all workplaces (including all areas where people go as part of their business inc basements). This must be by natural light, but only SO FAR AS IS REASONABLY PRACTICABLE. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing - interpreting the phrase 'so far as is .....' needs a bit of understanding. Clearly, it will not often be possible to light basements entirely with natural light. (although not enough use is made of 'light tubes' - internally reflective pipes or bundles of fibre optic cables that 'collect' daylight at roof level, and deliver it into the area(s) where it wouldn't otherwise reach. Not much use when the sun has set , but otherwise, better than working in headache and nausea inducing fluorescents...) (and yes, I know all about blue daylight tubes) This subject is close to my heart because my office is in the 'sub-basement' - and there's a whole other level below me!
