I am writing this letter following the recent tragic news of exposure to CO in an hotel abroad resulting in the death of children.
Following complaints by a number of employees regarding severe headaches an investigation was undertaken to find the cause. The initial investigation showed these employees all worked in and around the same area, which was an enclosed cold store where LPG powered fork trucks operate.
This finding led to me purchasing a basis Carbon Monoxide meter to measure what levels of CO where present. To my surprise the levels in this area were 330 parts per million, well in excess of safe working levels stated in HSE guidance EH/40. It goes with out saying the truck in question was removed from the area immediately.
The Fork trucks used inside the factory are all LPG powered, but are fitted with catalytic converters to reduce the emissions. The truck in question had unknowingly developed a fault causing the catalytic converter to fail (this is not something which would be noted on the pre-shift inspections). This coupled with it being used in an area with poor ventilation resulted in the build up of CO gas and over exposure during use.
We have now developed a system where periodic monitoring of workplace CO levels are recorded to ensure this doesn't happen again.
I would like to couple this with a training/information session of cause and effects of CO exposure but have found it difficult to obtain information relevant to factory environments, although there is an abundence relating to residential exposure.
I anybody has any I would be greatful for help.
