All,
Not a health and safety question but I know we all seem to get dragged into the environmental debates as well so here goes....
Does any one know what is likely to fall out from a diesel and gas burning power station? We have noticed oily deposits on cars near the station. The station swears it can not be them!

Hi James - I was working at a power station not too long ago and they were very happy with the efficiency of the operation which they quoted at 52%. This suggested to me that complete combustion was not happening and therefore some particles must be escaping to atmosphere.
Another power plant I am aware of "blow the safety valves" once per week to ensure they are operating and they release a lot of soot.
I suggest that you contact the Environmental Agency who will demand to see their emission's to air measurements and take it from there.

You can always use the FOI Act to get info and your local EA will be able to give you the stats for this as it should fall under the IPPC regime and you will then be able to see exactly WHAT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO PUT INTO THE ATMOSPHERE.
