I'd put this on the closed forum but of course no one goes there!

With the frequent rants about CSCS cards ; am I the only one who would willingly pay for a better IOSH credit card size card with a photo on it.

The current papery thing lack credibility.

I agree they are a bit flimsy and cheap looking.

But don't think I would be prepared to pay additional cost's on top of the fees already paid!

Good idea. My wife is a member of the NUS and each year they send her a new membership card which is half coated with plastic and a peel off section so that she can attach a new improved photo, she is like a good whine, improves with age apparently. Should not cost very much more than the current card.

A bit like this thread, nothing like a good whine to end the week.

Have you guys nothing better to do? Or maybe I should be saying 'Have I got nothing better to do!'

Whatever, does it matter what the card looks like - who do you show it to that is interested?

Peter,

When I visit client's sites I have to prove who I am and my qualifications.

I'm fortunate that I have CSCS Platinum but many people for obscure reasons can't.

Smurf,

Yes I do, but how do I prove I didn't:

a. find it in the street
b. find it in my cornflakes
c. bought it on e-bay
d. mugged a CMIOSH

Without photo ID the same problems occur with my current card.

Come to think of it, the current card actually reminds me of my "man for U.n.c.l.e." warrant card that came with rice krispies or whatever.

All,
We are currently researching a better quality membership card for next year. We do, however, need to keep ourselves within the budgetary constraints from our Board of Trustees but we will do our best.
A photographic card is something that we may consider at a later stage but it won't be next year. I will, of course, have to consider the stress levels of my staff who would have to sit and look at thousands of pictures of safety practitioners!

always thought it a good idea to have some ones blood group or are they diabetic etc (obviously not all med history) on any card when working on site, why don't those CSCS card providers have the capability of putting this info in them, Oh yeah there a competency safety card for working on site!

Tells you something about the competency of the people who thought up the CSCS idea.

How many times have I had to show someone my IOSH card, never, just give them your IOSH number and tell them there's a lot of fraud about and the best way is for them to check it out, the current card is fine.

Do IOSH members even need a card?

I do not need extra expense for a bit of plastic, if others want a nice "flashy" card let them pay for it, but do not make it compulsory.

You don't need the number. Just ring IOSH and give the name.

Personally I'm surprised that any member has been asked for their card, in 15 years I've not been asked once. The only time I've used it was for the membership number to join this site.

I don't need a fancy card, and I must have better things to do, surely, than respond to a thread like this.

Have a good weekend all, dreaming about gold and platiin platingu platimum ....silver cards

Never ever ever ever been asked for IOSH card, but would be inclined to say to anyone querying my membership let them ring IOSH and check.

No need for fancy cards I find the current one quite adequate.

The present one is ok. But you can't get ice of the windscreen with it.
Would be useful as proof of identity in other areas though, if IOSH could persuade people of its value. Most people I have asked don't have a clue who or what IOSH is.
Have a good weekend.

The only reason I would want the card to change is if we were thinking of keeping it for more than 1 year at a time.

Otherwise the flimsy paper one will do me ... it never comes out of the wallet until booking an IOSH training course.

Nice words to end your response with; can't be true though....surely not? Think of the fun you could have putting faces to names; then on the other hand..........

Membership people please take note:

Can I have a hologram on my next card - I like holograms?

Also - can you print the card in an ink that does not smudge!

Are you looking for suggestions on what to put on the hologram?

Let's see, a chain and shackle might be good, purely as a symbolic gesture you understand.

Nearly 20 years and I have never shown my card to anyone. Not even my wife.

But I must say that even Mensa do a better card than that. And I've never shown that to anyone for the last 40 years.

Well at present i've not got IOSH qualifications however it is something i'm considering. However I feel i'vegot to speak up here.

The CSCS scheme is there to ensure that at least a minimum level of knowledge is obtained prior to working on site.

The CSCS scheme is not perfect but when you tie in affiliate schemes it does improve.

My own card is with the JIB however my safety assessment is not the ECS one but is the ECITB Passport to Safety which is a very basic course.

What surprises me is that IOSH appear not to have even discussed with the CSCS people regarding an affiliated membership similar to the ECS scheme operated by the JOB or am i missing the point ?

Chris,
I am currently putting together an application for exemption of IOSH members from taking the NVQ if they have other types of qualifications. As professional safety advisers, however, it does seem a bit much that Chartered and Technician Members have to take a very basic touch screen test when they have already been assessed to a much deeper level and have proved this by their IOSH membership, which is a fair point.

I too also agree with your sentiments. I have had a quick flick through my wallet and have see that my IOSH membership card is the tastiest looking card in there. I have one I got for filling in a form at a well known comedy club which is by far an away better quality, and it was free!

Can we have a small one aswell that fits onto my key ring just the same as my 'Tesco Clubcard'... and can we get discount points when we book courses by building up points... mmmmm??

The photo would be good of course.. personally, I have a 'modelling contract with God...' and one can never have enough photo's of yourself in your wallet! (Is it bad to have one's pic on a business card???)

Kind regards PaulA

Some interesting remarks about the IOSH membership card.

You would have thought an institution would have issued us all better cards.

Very disappointing.

As an environmentally aware organisation, is it tenable to issue cards which have no function other than as an aide-memoire of your membership number?

If the card has an actual use, which can be justified, great... If not, better to save energy, materials and money.
