A simple question for Monday evening
Do hand pallet trucks need statutory inspections as required by LOLER.
I assume they are classed as lifting equipment.
Our insurer says they do, but their own engineer says they don't.

Go with the insurance mate as they certainly do!
Ask the engineer if he accepts full civil liability and will pay the compensation personally if anything goes wrong!

Morning Barry,
This one has been raised on the forum a couple of times in the past and usually starts a bit of a debate. I experienced a the same problem in the past and to put it to be I wrote to the LOLER Policy Department of the HSE. The response NO.
Apply PUWER to the pallet trucks. Just make sure that if you take them off your insurance register you have a robust inspection regime in place to comply.

No, hand pallet trucks do not need examining under LOLER.

I agree with dp, perhaps worthwhile clarifying why - in my humble opinion primary function is to move articles stored on pallets and not primarily to lift. I`m sure others may disagree but the LOLER regs advocate an appreciation of risk as a consequence of failure. Enforcing Authorities would`nt expect to see LOLER reports, but would expect to see something under PUWER.
