Posted By Alan Nicholls Hi guys Is there a specified minimum distance between stands of parallel racking, for storage and use of FLT access. Think I have read it somewhere but cant remember where. Reason for question FLT has to use space between pallets on opposite racking to gain access to manoeuvre into position. My view this is an unsafe system of work! Any thoughts please

Posted By Martin Taylor it will depend entriely on the FLT type being used - discuss with your truck suppliers they should be able toadvise the minimum safe aisle width Martin

Posted By JayJay Hi Alan ! Sounds also like you're using the wrong type of truck ! Racking aisles are normally more suited to Reach trucks and not counterbalance type machines. If you are using Reach trucks then the aisles are definitely too narrow by the sounds of it. Trying to cram in too many aisles will result in an unsafe act occuring. From what i can remember i think that the area in question needs to be a truck and a halfs length at least for the turning circle. But as the previous threader said the manufacturer or supplier would give you sound advice hopefully. Kind Regards JJ

Posted By Gordon Thelwell Hello Alan, I've emailed you the industry guidelines for the 5 different classifications of truck and the advised minimum clearances for pallet racking. If there are still any blanks in the problem you're experiencing, please feel welcome to get in touch. Gordon

Posted By Alan Nicholls Thanks to Gordon for sending the info should be able to work out the correct distances required. The area is used for storage of incomming goods. only 3 stands of racking which tace up 1/3 of a workshop area, with pedestrian access. The FLT in use is a category 1 truck. The racking was installed for use with a stand on stacker truck. We do use a Counterbalance truck in the yard, but it is not used in the building. Some adjustments to be made; but I am told today that the area is due to be reorganised. No time scale yet though may be just a smoke screen. But then I could be totally wrong in thinking nothing will be done, until a near miss or heaven forbid an accident. Thanks again for the info guys Alan N
