Posted By GavinR Hi, Can anyone advise me if scaffolding can be kept as a permanent access method around an existing structure? This will only ever be used once a year for maintenance or breakdown and will be controlled with a permit to work system so that if required to be accessed for breakdown it will be fully inspected by competent inspector prior to use. Before OK'ing any of this we will obviously consult with the designer to determine its design capabilities, etc and it will be put under a planned maintenance and inspection system but just wanted other opinions as to if this sounded suitable use for scaffolding? Appreciate any feedback. Gavin

Posted By peter gotch Hi Gavin, Nothing wrong with this in principle. We have a project where this is exactly what is planned for access to advertising banners, pending demolition of structure in a couple of years time. Regards, Peter

Posted By Merv Newman Gavin, I think it is a fairly common practice especially in the chemicals industry. It's much easier to scaffold around an awkward sticky-out bit than to have a custom made stair. Subject to the usual design and inspection restraints as said. Merv
