Posted By holmezy Hello all, just had a cd land on my desk for fire training and awareness. Its on a trial basis and as a base level, I think its quite good. However, in the sales blurb is the following statement "Fire and health and safety training require employers to provide fire training foe ALL staff by law. It also requires employers to train staff at least every 12 months" I've spent quite some time on the HSE website and whilst I agree with the first part, I can't find anything that states "12 months". Am I a bit dim or are they twisting the regs to suit their cunning sales campaign? If I'm not being dim, can they do that? Holmezy its been a long and frustrating day so going for a beer now.

Posted By shaun mckeever You are not dim holmezy. There is nothing that specifies that training must be given every 12 months. Training must be given periodically or when there has been changes such as increased responsibility or material changes to the building. Having said that I think refresher training once per year is recommended. I don't agree with computer based training unless it supplements on site training rather than being the sole means of training.

Posted By holmezy Shaun, thats exactly what I think. For some reason I actually started to doubt what I knew and believed what the dvd blurb was telling me. I would have thought that its a mis representation of the requirements and as such they shouldn't be allowed to "scare" folks into doing it. I can imagine many companies, with little or no H+S knowledge, will recieve this and pay for it on the basis of "train every 12 months cuz its the law". I agree with the refresher training on a regular basis, as you said. Thanks

Posted By J Knight Hi Folks, This cd is definitely playing fast and loose with the law. There are a couple of industries with a quasi-legal requirement to train annually, I'm thinking of Healthcare and Social Care where guidance from the regulators stipulates annual training, but by and large the only requirement is that training should be 'adequate' and 'repeated periodically where appropriate' (RR(FS)O s21), John
