Chris,

Some guidance at

http://www.safequarry.co...nitions%20vrsion%202.pdf

There is a database with information as to where you are likely to encounter unexploded ordnance + specialists who do site sweeps.

Regards, Peter

this is an expert area get experts in - do not undertake such work yourself unless you are competent -

the local authority usually have a list of where known munitions are and where heavy concentrations were

a general assess is easy and the area should be covered in the emergency actions part of your systems

Thanks for that. The work is actually on old MOD property, the job is to dig out for excavations etc, not specifically remove munitions if you know what i mean??/

Chris,

Who owns the land now? Is the work for the owner? If so then there is an onus on them.

The vast majority of old military land has been searched/cleared before being handed to local authorities etc, that doesn't mean that there is absolutely no explosive ordnance there but the likelihood is reduced substantially. If the land ceased to be owned by the military before approximately early to mid 70's then it may not have been cleared if their was cause for it to be. It is relatively easy to have a desk top study undertaken which will reveal ownership and past uses of the land. It may be that it was never a munitions storage area or training area or target during the war and hence likelihood of encountering EO or UXO pretty remote.

Contact me direct and I will be able to advise further.

If found, evacuate area and call 999 and explain. Everything will then be taken care of. If you are not an expert in this field, do not even try!! I work for the MOD and alongside some ex-armourers and their main concern is with the public trying to undertake things they really were not trained to undertake such as move said explosive, try and diffuse, stand around it and poke it, throw things at it, re-bury it and try and forget etc.

999 is quick and easy and experts will come a-running!!!

Dealing with this kind of thing is very much an expert role, I know with the Olympics development area they are still wondering what to do with the unknown UXB's that they are likely to come across whilst excavating.

My own personal advice would be:-
If it's not ticking when you find it call in the experts.
If it is ticking secure the area then call in the experts.
If it starts or stops ticking whilst you are next to it RUN!

It never ceases to amaze me the variation of requests that arise on these forums, and how much is to be learned from it.
