Posted By Exdeeps Hello, This may come over as a bit confusing, but I will ty to explain. This morning I followed a mobile crane on a main road and was a bit surprised to be able to see the whole right hand side of the vehicle whilst travelling in a straight line. What I saw was all four wheels running parallel but the rear wheels were displaced approximately one wheel width to the left giving the appearance of a twisted chassis. Now I believe this type of crane has four wheel steering, so my question is really, is it normal for this "twist" or is the tracking off. My gut instinct is that the vehicle is probably not roadworthy as it stands but before I go shooting from the lip at the crane operator I thought I would ask, Jim

Posted By Paul Oliver Phone the crane company in question and let them know. No doubt you will end up speaking to a hire controller who will no idea of what you are talking about. dependent on the age of the crane, newer cranes 1996 onwards, have electrical systems that lock the steering in the correct postion, prior to this it is a visual (line up) check with a manual lock... alternatively the steering joints may be knackered on the rear axle.....driver must have been having a great laugh counter acting the problem.

Posted By Exdeeps Thanks for that Paul, pretty much what I thought, but reassuring to know. I will ring the crane operator to let him know. Thinking about it, there was a funny lurching action in corners, Jim
