I have been tasked with looking at the possible use of using company mobiles as a means of locating/tracking lone workers.
Being a local authority, we have a number of staff who are required to work alone. This can be visiting homes or inspecting structures in very rural areas.
There is the obvious potential for these individuals to come to harm, either by deliberate act or accident. Whilst we have procedures that require these people to advise of their diaries and movements, if something untoward occurs it could be difficult.
So far we have had no major dramas, but a few minor incidents have prompted a review of the RA, hence the need to consider tracking for location purposes.
Advice & info from those using such systems would be much appreciated.

I too work for an LA and have been charged with developing the Corporate Standard...one area the project group is looking at is some means of tracking, calling for emergency, and emergency response.
To be honest, there are hundreds of providers and all the major mobile players have a hand in the systems...one in particular, although not the cheapest, has already been through the Governments Procurement hoops and, therefore, allows you to bypass the tender process.
The system in question is about to go live in one small area of the LA and we will be following its potential closely.

Posted By Pat Hannaway Hi, there are a number of such systems on the market. They mainly fall into two categories. The first is a discrete ID card holder with inbuilt wireless alarm / one way phone. It can transmit to a monitoring company. Some also have inbuilt GPS tracking capability. Obviously more features mean greater cost, but if the risk assessment identifies high risk, especially violence to staff it is worth it.
The other main system is simply a mobile phone with a GPS tracker system which can be remotely monitored by a telecoms company. This is not so good where staff are at risk of violence.

some of the phone gps systems are just as good/better than the cards...however I agree that the cards are more discreet (and can be activated very discretely or if the badge is forcibly removed)
The phone types are also better if you want a rounded system with portable sat-nav
dont try google etc unless you are prepared to wade through all to find the golden goose...companies pay to be top of the pile, they do not earn it through the quality of product! or be very precise about what you want and filter that way....
