Posted By Karel Simpson Hi All,
I currently work for a construction company and we have people working with things such as pigeon faeces when working on roofing repairs etc, we have plumbers in shower/toilet areas as well as other things.
Unfortunately occupational health side of things is definatley not my strong point and my company leave it for the employees to take care of themselves however I want to change this and put in place some type of health management scheme to monitor things and to ensure our lads go home safely each night.
Does anybody know where I should start or where I can gain information on this.
All help appreciated.
Regards KS

Posted By Chris Pope I have joined the BOHS to get the best information on these practical issues. For infection type risks HSE have the advisory committee on Dangerous Pathogens - you might find their notes on risk assessment on the hse home site

Posted By Alison WR Karel, Have you asked your insurers [employers liability]. Many have consultancy divisions, rehabilitation departments, medical advisers, etc. They may be able to provide a service direct, or to recommend a provider. Also, NHS direct has an occ-health division called NHS Plus - www.nhsplus.nhs.ukthe page http://www.nhsplus.nhs.uk/local_unit/index.asp takes you to local providers. Finally, if you google 'occupational health provider' plus 'uk', you'll find lots of names and links. There are plenty of providers who would provide advice, examinations, telephone support etc. [Obviously for a fee]. Good luck Alison

I found our pest control company to be an extremely helpful source of information on these issues, lots of information sheets etc. If you need anything let me know.
