can anyone out there point me to an acredited course for the above. Is there such as thing? I have had this conversation with my team regarging what and who would make good temporary works coordinators and technical know how needed. my company runs an in house 3 day course because they say that it cannot be had anywhere else. Is this true?
Given the responsibility of the task and the technical input required I fell that an inhouse course may not be enough.
Cheers

I would treat any short duration courses with caution. I don't want to put you of but temporary works are (usually) as complicated as permanent works i.e. structures.
I wouldn't like to learn to design a bridge, tunnel, culvert, underpass .... in 2 OR 3 days. I am not sure what type of temporary works you refer to but do please tread carefully

David,
I apprciate the concern and I could not agree more. We are currently carrying out a skills audit and devising a training matrix. we have identified a gap in the management of temporary works. By temporary works I am refering to Scaffolding by design, Trenching and shoring, falsework and much more. In fact the whole gammit. we have identified several structural engineers within the organisation who would in my opinion be ideal candidates. However it would seem that there is no accredited course available off the shelf. many people offer training but will it be as good and certificated as say CITB etc,?
It looking at the moment that the inhouse mode is the only way we can go. Pity because I was looking for the best accredited external provider I could get.
Thanks for the information anyway guys I am most grateful.

It seems as though you are talking about a co-ordinator under CDM (proposed).
Yes - the co-ordinator apparently needs the "qualifications" to be a co-ordinator, however, I would suggest that if you have got Structural Engineers on the team i.e.
I Struct E, full members of the institution of structural engineers they should almost certainly be qualified in this respect. It may be the case that they need to register on the eg. ICE register to qualify as coordinator but it should not be a problem if they are suitably qualified and have extensive experience of design and operations.
All that being said, I would have thought that if one qualified coordinator was in place, he should be able to oversee the various designers and ensure that all of the design aspects have been adequately covered, therefore, the structural engineers don't really need to be coordinators anyway.
Hope this helps - if I have gone off the track completely, please ignore and apologies for doing so.
Regards
DrB
