Posted By Kinnikin Can any one tell me where or provide me with a definition of a mutagen that shop floor workers will understand.
I know the CHIP Definition but anything extra would be good.
In essence I am trying to get the workers on board with why we are protecting them as they don't really understand the hazard.
Thanks
K

Posted By P.R Hi K
A substance that will transform human cells to a new form.
Over simplified I know, but accurate in essence!!

Posted By Alan Nicholls Hi K
Substances and preparations which, if they are inhaled or ingested or if they penetrate the skin, may induce genetic defects or increase their incidence. May cause mutation.
I don't envy you that one!
Legionnaire's and Hepatitis are the worst we are likely to come across.
Good luck Alan

Posted By Adrian Watson A mutagen causes changes to genetic material in future generations!
A mutagen, carcinogen and teratogen are not the same; a carcinogen causes cancer; a teratogen causes birth defects. Whilst a mutagen does not cause cancer or miscarriages, some materials with mutagenetic potential are also carcinogens and reproductive toxins.
Reproductive toxin may affect gametes, prevent fertilisation, prevent implantation, cause developmental defects, causes abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal mortality.

Posted By John Murgatroyd Wikipedia: Exposure to a mutagen is the means by which the anthropomorphic animals in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for example, gained their forms. There are many less comic and more extreme versions in fiction, such as the mutated monsters on The X-files, some of which may actually be plausible according to some biologists. On that show, the writers' favorite premise was that all humans had left-over strands of alien DNA in them, which sometimes became active. Don't bother telling them that Ultraviolet is a mutagen, or that some viruses are too. They may not take you seriously when you point-out that many things they will encounter in life are mutagens.
