No. But it will assure you and your insurance company that the guy/gal ain't going to drop dead with a tonne weight on board. not that week anyway.

There is no legal requirement but there is provision for medicals for forklift truck operators in the Lifttruck Code of Practice.
From memory the requirements are for;
1) Operators to have 18/12 vision in both eyes;
2) There is a requirement to have 5 yearly medicals after the age of 45 and bi-annual medicals on reaching the age of 60;
3) I have also come across certain conditions which will have an effect on eyesight e.g. Multiple Sclerosis, and on an employee reporting such a ilness/ condition it would be prudent to arrange for medical surveillance.

Giving a FLT driver a medical is good practice but there is not a specific legal requirement.
One thing to consider is that if the FLT driver is taking medication it may affect their ability to operate machinery, therefore it is also good practice to ensure that they understand if prescribed any medication, they should inform you especially if it states that heavy machinery should NOT be operated, or taking medication may make the person drowsy.
Boring legal aspect - Section 7 of HASWA 74 - to ensure their health & safety and that of others etc etc

Andy !
have a good look at HS(G)6. I think it mentions something in there regarding the fitness of operators, but again it boils down to interpretation.
