Posted By Philip Harrison Apparently scientists are telling us that we need to lean backwards to an angle of 135 degrees when sat in a chair to prevent back problems.(Daily Mail 28th Nov). As the world gone mad, will I have to alter the advice I give when doing DSE assessments? Perhaps I ought to buy a decent paper!

Posted By sylvia This is not really new. Grandjean, E, in his highly considered book "Fitting the task to the man" suggested this in 1981, when PCs were only just starting to be used at work. OSHA have had 4 variations on recommended PC posture for some time, one is standing, but one is a definite recline. It stands to reason - we drive cars comfortably for hours in a slightly reclined posture, our backs and shoulders well supported. I have been using (and recommending) as much recline as possible whilst still able to reach keyboard etc. for some time. However, that is one of the challenges with such a posture - flat desks require long arms to reach. Which takes us right back to the old idea of a sloping surface, to bring work up and closer. Need to bolt-on cup-holders though!! There are some (ex-typing school!) who can sustain the bolt upright position and are happy to do it, but most simply perch on the edge of their chairs, well away from any backrest, however adjustable it might be, leaning forward and basically doing themselves all manner of harm. I have never thought that "sitting up straight" was either healthy or helpful. The only reason we do it is because of "old habits" and old thoughts. Research has been pointing this way for years. I am still seeking a good DSE training package that acknowledges this, and doesn't bang on about 90 degree angles, like we are built of mecchano bits.

Posted By Chas Whilst this may be the 'best' way to sit, I do not think it should be recommended until someone designs a suitable workstation/desk that will accommodate such a sitting position, so you can sit without everything falling off a tilted desk. Sitting in a slightly reclined manner whilst your desk remains on a horizontal plane will surely encourage slouching or over stretching to reach the mouse.(However I can see that it may benefit someone with varifocals).

Posted By Ken Taylor At least this should make the standard 'hunched' position seem even more unhealthy.

Posted By JayJay Hi All i've also heard on the grapevine that they recommend you sit down for approximately 20 minutes before you get up to excercise. That means i'll be up and down like a tapdancers wig. No disrespect to tapdancers meant ! Especially if you're folically challenged. regards JJ

Posted By Tabs I have always advocated that the seat back be adjusted to a comfortable position - and for most people that means a slight backward lean. Our local bandits (sorry, train operator) introduced new coaches not long ago, and they have made the seats slightly more upright - gee, how uncomfortable after about 15 minutes! Everyone can be seen shuffling forward, leaving the small of the back completely unsupported ... tsk! Never measured the angle we use car seats at, but I would like to hazard a guess that they average 20 degrees off vertical.

Posted By Bob Shillabeer Is this serious? I know quite a lot of people who suffer back problems from poor posture. It's not just how you sit, upright or not, but how your arms are held, where the mouse is, how far away is the other desk top stuff you use the hight of the screen what your eyes are like etc etc etc that's what causes back problems not angles of 135 degrees

Posted By Ken Taylor 135 deg may be OK for long-term sitting but it sounds like a pain in the neck for DSE users and those who still write on bits of paper sited on desks.

Posted By Merv Newman moderators are not on duty 24/7 They have lives. It is very rare that we get spammed but on an open forum it can happen. I suggest that everyone replies to the spammer with massive multiple "orders" for phones. with fake e-mail addresses. That should tie them up for a while. Merv

Posted By Jane Blunt Hi All Just so that people joining this thread can understand what has happened - a large advert for sundry electronic goods appeared in this thread. This arrived while the moderators were enjoying their weekend, but it has now been removed (along with several other copies). Regards Jane Blunt
