Up to now I have also undertaken COSHH Assessments of the Activity (i.e. how, why and where the substance is being used). However following recent discussions I am considering undertaking individual COSHH Assessments for each employee based on their exposure. This would make assessments more individual allowing me to identify there overall exposure to all the substances we use, and potential individual risk factors (e.g. asthma).

As a result individual control measures could be identified. I feel this could be a more effective way of controlling risks from exposure to substances where there use can not be eliminated or controlled in another manner.

I ask if anyone has any comments on my consideration, is anyone carrying out assessments in this manner already, and what problems (other than increased workload) there is undertaking the assessments in this way.

Sounds like a lot of extra work to me - unless you have few employees using hazardous substances. Can't you simply get each employee or their line manager to record their use of the substances on a work sheet if you want to have individual exposure records?
