Health and Safety Management Systems in construction

Posted By bricklayer I'm looking to implement a Health and Safety Management Systems into our construction company we have approx 50 employees. Could anyone give me some basic advice, as I have never had to put anything like this together before? I just want to make sure we are covering everything. I have already had a look at HSG 65 but it's the documents and allocation of responsibilities throughout the management structure I'm not sure of. For instance what should I be asking of Contracts Managers and Site Managers do I have to get them to sign up to anything.
Many thanks

Posted By Granville Jenkins Hi bricklayer!
As a point in the right direction I would recommend that you contact the following company: 'The Health and Safety People', 16a Market Square, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 1HU. Telephone 01767 682800. Fax 01767 683883.
I do not know the company on a personal level, but they have provided the Health and Safety Policy Statement, the Health and Safety Procedures and Safe Systems of Work documentation as part of a tender submission on behalf of a short-listed Contractor for building related work.
One final note: You may need to confirm the contact details as the information that I have goes back to April 03.
Regards Granville

Posted By Ian G Hutchings Hi
I have emailed you direct. I would personally advise against anyone that offers to provide a load of documents without working closely with you to understand your business and risk profile.
All the best
Ian

Posted By Salus Brickie, have a look at the HSE booklet INDG 324, if it is still available. and then trawl through their web site for anything else you need.
info in, indg259 / indg275 / indg232 / indg213 / indg163 / misc136 / hse31
set yourself up a kind of flow chart, and put in job descriptions starting at the bottom through to your top man.
allocate H & S responsibilities, e.g. site agent+ contracts manager for risk assessments, to all job descriptions if necessary
basically you will need someone to carry out, risk assessments COSHH assessments noise assessments first aid someone to look after plant and equipment you will need to train those who require it to ensure they can carry out their responsibilities fire and evacuations
