Posted By Alison Phillips Help - as a training provider offering fully funded training, we need to vet a companies H&S systems prior to placing a learner. One of the requirements is that the premises is registered either with HSE or Local Authority. Can any one tell me how I can check this apart from taking the organisations word for it, bearing in mind some of the organisations have been in business for many years and often have trouble locating their copy of OSR1 or F9. Many thanks Alison

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Alison, It's a problem we regularly encounter too. Instead of being prescriptive we ask for general evidence that the relevant authority is aware of the business, e.g. any correspondence or Business Card left by visiting inspector etc. If anyone has any better suggestions, do let us know.

Posted By Malcolm Hogarth This is a subject that I am also interested in. When I ask the question I am usually told that as the organisation pays business rates then the council should know about them!! Malcolm

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Alison If the prospective company is unable to locate the required paperwork, you could ask the appropriate enforcing authority if they know of the company. Paul

Posted By Ralph Baqar Alison, not all local authorities insist on this registration. I’d check with the area’s local authority. I came across this many years ago when I worked as a consultant and the national company that was one of my clients were not aware of the requirements. When I contacted the LA I was told that they did not enforce it and therefore my client did not ned to do anything with regards to this issue. Regards. R.

Posted By Pete48 Alison, I dont think there is an easy way to do this as others have said already. I simply report what I find, "no documentary evidence to suupport claim that the business is registered". "no OSR1 seen but visit by Local Authority Inspector on **** seen." It is only one of many criteria that you look at after all. A busines with good safety mgmt systemns in place and no OSR1 versus a business with no safety mgmt systmes and OSR1? It is only critical if found as one of several items below standard. IMHO that is, of course.
