Posted By p winter I am wondering if anyone has already been through this. We issue a health questionnaire to potential employees before they start their employment with us and I am now being asked to introduce something similar as an ongoing check on employees fitness. This is a well intentioned move, however I am uncomfortable the way it is developing. Who should review the questionnaire and what action if any should result. At present the individuals manager reviews the completed form and if any cause for concern risk assesses the situation ie the employee and their work. HR are now thumbing through these and highlighting problems for me (H&S) to deal with. I am coming to the view the only way we can assess an employees fitness is to send them to a doctor (or similar) for an opinion and take other employees of the company (HR/H&S and their managers) out of the loop

Posted By Pugwash I agree entirely with your view. A medical practitioner needs to be reviewing these forms, determining fitness for work and them providing feedback to HR/H&S on appropriate actions to take. I think HR/H&S would have a lot of difficulty establishing that there were competent to review these questionnaires. See if you can find an occupational health service provider locally who can provide you with the service. I think you will find it is cost effective.

Posted By Ken Taylor I agree - except to add that, where a completed questionnaire states that the employee now has a medical condition that clearly indicates a significant risk to him/herself or others, action may need to be taken prior to any referral to a doctor.
